To all United furloughees,
Even though the company has indicated to the UAL MEC System Scheduling Committee that it intends to recall at the beginning of the year they continue to waffle on when the recall letters will be sent out and when training will actually begin. The current company plan is still to recall 50 to 125 pilots in 2013 for summer 2013 flying. Though this is good news, the amount of recalls currently planned for 2013 flying will affect very few of our furloughees.
That being said, there are still about 40 slots available in the November and December 2012 classes at CAL for furloughed United pilots under the terms of the Merger Transition and Process agreement. In addition to these positions class dates have also been scheduled in January 2013. CAL Pilot Recruiting is gearing up to start interviewing candidates to place pilots off the street in these positions if not filled by United furloughees. Domiciles for these classes will most likely be IAH or EWR on either the 737 or 757.
I know that many of you are waiting for a recall directly back to L-UAL, or want to see what is in the JCBA, and/or how things play out with the SLI. I also know that there are some of you on the fence as to whether or not to accept a position at CAL because of their current work rules, or lack there of, and having to commute to IAH or EWR. Either way, I felt it important to point out a few things that may have not been taken into consideration as you have contemplated the job offers at CAL.
· Depending on where you are on the seniority list and given the small number of recalls United currently has planned for next year a recall back to L-UAL may never happen for you if the JCBA is achieved and an arbitration ruling on the SLI occurs some time next year.
· Once the operational merger is complete the recall process at L-UAL and the hiring process at L-CAL will stop and the recall process at the “new” United will begin.
· Recall once the “operational” merger is complete will be to the “new” United and the domicile and equipment offered may not be to a previous L-UAL domicile or equipment, but could most likely be to the same domiciles and equipment as are available now in the class slots still available at CAL. Furthermore, an assignment to GUM may no longer be voluntary, as it currently is, because GUM will be a “United” domicile once the merger is complete.
· Based on the unfilled vacancies in the last CAL system vacancy bid and the number of United furloughees who have accepted positions in the currently offered classes CAL will need to hire nearly 250 pilots to staff for next summer. Taking this into the equation one must consider that for every new hire that fills a position at CAL will result in one less recall that will need to be offered to a furloughed United pilot who has waited to see how things play out in the merger once the operational merger is complete. For those who are junior this could further delay their recall by months and possibly years once the merger is complete depending on the recall acceptance rate and how many pilots are actually hired off the street.
· The hiring process at the “new” United will not begin until all furloughed United pilots have been offered recall.
If you have any questions concerning job opportunities at CAL please feel free to contact me or Captain Charlie Venema, CAL Pilot Recruiting. If you are interested in coming off of bypass for one of these positions you can contact Captain Venema XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX .

Actually, I think Todd was just trying to lay out the facts as they are currently. Whether anyone likes them or not. Hopefully, you weren't waiting for Chen to do so.....
I, for one, believe the old UAL is waiting for what they hope is a ratified TA so that they can recall to the most junior position in the "new" UAL after the JCBA is signed. Nothing new regarding furloughs coming back to available slots in the most junior base/seat. The only possible exception would be voluntary furloughs that had recall rights back to their vacated fleet/seat/base upon recall according to the furlough mitigation LOA.
That LOA of course only is in effect until such time as a new contract is signed. I don't think much will be deleted in a JCBA, but I somehow envision that one clause to be removed. I could be wrong however. Won't be the first time.
I think it boils down to, if you're on the fence and intend to come back, you may do better by bitting the bullet a little sooner to get feet on the property. While waiting on the JCBA will hopefully lead to better pay and work rules, the wait may extend your opening for a return to a potentially much later date. That's what I took from it.

To be fair, every single UAL furloughee has been offered a position at CAL at this point, which is nice but not as nice as an actual recall.

It's not your fault UAL is not recalling or the pilots bypassed the CAL offer. We are not "merged" yet. I would not treat you badly. Why would I or anyone? You are not taking anyone's job. CAL is hiring and needs pilots now. CAL is picking up right where they left off when the retirement age changed to 65; lot's of hiring. Don't wait its about seniority. Just remember that the furloughed pilots will come back senior to you.
