Pilots Wife,

You got tons of great advice on the previous pages, even though I would be hesitiant to call any of us "experts" when it comes to Airline career advice. I think airline career "victims" would be more fitting.

But seriously, I agree with the majority of the above posters - take the job at UCAL. One important point that I have not heard anybody bring up is what does your husband want?

Fremont, Pacifica, Sacramento and east. Discovery Bay, Tracy, Stockton, Modesto if you wear a flack jacket. Even some commuters out of FAT. Enough flying out of SJC to live south of the airport, but that commute is one of the worst in the bay.

Annnddd...as the CA economy recovers, the traffic on I-80 gets worse by the week.

Scoop
Scoop...He isn't sure. Quality of Life is very important to him ie:...being able to coach soccer, having holidays off, driving to work, bidding for whatever days off he wants. Are you guys able to drop trips, trade trips and or pick up trips too? There is no question the pay is better, the benefits and retirement are better but the big question is really about QOL where he would be based and for how long? EWR at first...but how long would that last...with integration happening soon who knows if that will help or hurt his chances of moving to another base closer to home. What is life like when you commute to EWR and are on reserve? I can only imagine it would really suck and I'm not the one that would have to do it!!!

I didn't think it was possible to make it across the state line from SFO in less than 2 hours.

What Dave said; Discovery Bay, Tracy, Manteca, Stockton, Calaveras, all within 2 hours of SFO, But, you do have to put up with Jerry Brown as Governor,

He's going to have to feel the pain of the MAJOR SUCK for a while no doubt. It's simply a decision you guys as a family are going to have to work out. Short term pain for long term gain or stay comfortable with no up side potential.

PW,

No doubt the move to a major would include some short term sacrafice for long term gain. There are no guarantees in this industry - either choice carrys some risk but the conventional thinking is that the younger your husband is the more beneficial the move to a major would be.

UCAL is on the verge of a massive retirement surge, once the movement starts it should continue and like the other legacies UCAL has weathered the "lost decade" and will be very competitive going forward.

I have heard other bring up Pan Am, Eastern etc, and like I said - no guarantees in this industry, but unlike those carriers UCAL has survived its run through BK and the resulting airline will be that much stronger for it.

Fremont: sales tax 8.75%, state tax 9.3%, median home price $531,861, driving time in no traffic :40 minutes.

Stockton: sales tax 7.98%, state tax 9.3%, median home price $266,068, driving time in no traffic 1:30 minutes.

Sacramento: sales tax 7.75%, state tax 9.3%, median home price $278,724, driving time in no traffic 1:50 minutes.

Tracy: sales tax 7.91%, state tax 9.3%, median home price $417,883, driving time in no traffic 1:12 minutes.

Not exactly what I can easy living. Compare that with me working in Newark and living in NE PA.
Sales tax 6%, state tax 3%, median home $108,153, drive time to EWR 1:25.

I was born and raised in the Bay Area. I lived in Redwood City, Fremont, Hayward, and Menlo Park. I'll never go back. It's a huge pay cut.

Yup.

And in five years when that "stable" regional job is no longer stable because the feeder contract was underbid by another carrier and his current regional airline won a contract out of LGA the UAL job will look pretty good.

Of course, there will will have been 3000 pilots hired at UAL in the interim senior to him forever, presuming he can even get an interview.......
