Question regarding vacation for the UAL pilots:

What is the reasoning that vacation runs May-April instead of the calendar year? Maybe I'll understand the logic behind it if someone can explain it clearly. It's not a slam against that way. It's just not something I'm used to and one of the other things I don't like in the contract.

That being said, one side or the other was going to have to change the method of bidding for and allocation of vacation. I'm sure it would have created some questions for you all if it had gone to our calendar year bidding method, too.

So please, just some constructive explanations to this new method. Thanks.

Wish I could help you. It makes absolutely no sense to me either. I'm sure someone had an answer, but its all goofed up in my opinion. Perhaps it's to allow us to bid vacation right at the start of the year?

Been here 15+ years and I have no idea why they do it that way.

Unused and unbidden vacation gets assigned at the end of the vacation year. So if some really junior guy didn't bid vacation, he might be lucky enough to get vacation Dec 21st to Dec 31st, over Christmas, which he would not normally be able to hold it.

Vacation gets cancelled for things like transition training, so it drops into unassigned and can be used for trip drops etc.

It's all the same, just different.
