Default Just in from Moak

September 17, 2013
To All United and Continental Pilots

Dear Fellow Pilot,

Today in Washington, D.C., the Executive Council passed a resolution on the distribution of UAL and CAL Retro/Lump Sum Payments.

As a result of our due diligence and this resolution issued under ALPA policy, ALPA has asked the company to distribute the entire second tranche of the retro/lump sum payments to you as soon as possible, but no later than October 4, 2013. I will inform you if the date moves forward.

Fraternally,

Capt. Lee Moak
President

Allow me to translate this:

Dear fellow Pilots,

After a long and heated discussion, we have decided there is too much push-back from the rank and file. We have read the tea leaves and have decided, that it is our best interest to allow you to keep the entire amount of your 2nd Tranche. Please remember that starting with this coming year, We will begin applying 1.95% dues money against your B and C fund contributions. Our cost of doing business has increased to such a point that an increase in revenue is required.
Anyway, enjoy your ENTIRE 2nd Tranche and remember ALPA just saved you 5%.
Fraternally,
LM

ORRRR...
Dear fellow pilots,
Our lawyers have had barely 2 weeks to look at the low down, dirty, last minute lawsuits and have determined that they are frivolous and have little chance of success. Therefore you can have your money with no additional holdback. Please note that this is within 30 days of SLI as provided by the UPA. I am sorry that we have greedy pilots among us but that is life.
Fraternally,
LM

The TK guys...yes. The manangement guys, no. In any case, I am not a lawyer but I do respect the decision of LM and the ALPA BOD to take time to do due diligence on any and all lawsuits concerning my union. Evidently, either the 5% holdback from the first traunch was deemed sufficient for ALL possible payouts, or the risk posed by the latest lawsuits was determined to be minimal. Whatever. We are getting our cash with minimal delay. All this "pushback" is comical. ALPA is going to protect itself no matter what. As it should be.

Sled,

I guess that is the difference between you and me. I don't trust anyone. The sentence "alpa is going to protect itself no matter what" speaks volumes.

Seems like some folks are under the impression that the President of ALPA is paid the highest rate on the books of any ALPA carrier. That is not correct.

It's the average of the 5 highest ALPA paying positions or the max he could earn at his own carrier whichever is higher.

Ah, then that clears it up then, $564,000 IS NOT a lot of money. Thanks
