United Continental to furlough 685 flight attendants - Yahoo Finance

We've heard it all over and over. No pilot furloughs due this that and the other but $2 billion to cut is a lot of dough and they wanted 1950 FAs gone. Can't convince me the junior pilots at this company aren't in some ones sights for VRF, LOA or furlough. Save your pennies. Be wise people.

They've got pilots missallocated amongst the equipment but they definitely don't have too many of them. The FA furlough is both a negotiating tactic and a move to productivity. When LUAL FAs are capped at 80 hours (or thereabouts) per month and LCAL FAs have no cap (one EWR FA showed me the 220 hour month he was currently working) there's little question what the company will do. This furlough, along with an offer for LUAL FAs to fly on the LCAL side, is strong arm tactic.

This is all about the lack of integrated seniority list for the FA's. The reduction in L-UA metal (B757's) and addition of L-CO metal (B737's and B787's) is driving this. The FA's are experiencing exactly what we would have seen had we not been able to agree to a contract and get to the ISL. I believe they were still hiring FA's on the L-CO side recently.

I would never say never for the pilot furloughs, but this furlough of FA's is more about not having a combined workforce.

The days off being able to drop trips and hardly fly while keeping all the benefits will be over.

Bet someone at UAL/CAL told the politicians and the news media that there wouldn't be any furloughs as a result if the merger... Synergy... Buzzword...

Politicians need to hold these companies to their word. You want the DOJ to look the other way while you build this colossal empire, fine. But live up to your promises and your obligations. These are people's lives they're toying with.

Pure and simple this the way the Jeffhole does business. There will always be a them and us attitude at this airline. Jeff had made sure of that. I hope our F/As have enough spine to properly handle this situation. Synergy my ***..

Exactly right.

And why would any company want their FA capped at 80/m? What a waste of resources. It's a L-UAL FA's fault, they should have pushed for new updated TA 3 years ago, and match DALs. Personally I prefer to fly with new hire FA, at least they are excited about their new jobs, and doing it right, great attitude, amongst other attributes (and you all know what I mean ;) , we should furlough in revers seniority. :D

Jetlink,

Take a look here post number 235. It didn't take long for this prediction to come true...

Why did UAL Corp sign a contract that allowed them to be capped at 80 hours? Perhaps they saw some value in having a relatively well rested employee in the cabin? After all, they get to spend the whole flight as the face of the airline. If I were king of this joint, I would want them to be refreshed, valued, happy and incentivized. Yet, this is the FA's fault?

According to info on the other forum, the company has only met 13 times with the AFA over the last four YEARS. Do you remember the laugh out loud offers that management was offering us in our early contract negotiations? Yes, the F/A's are at fault.

Go ahead, validate the carnage. And when we merge with somebody down the road and they want to let YOU go because someone else will do it for less enjoy your plight. But don't expect the F/A's to step up for you and your job.

"First they came for the Communists...."
