Not really. Read up on how the manufacturer/DOD come up with a new platform's designated name. It's actually become a standard beuracratic process. Even the name "Lightnig II" was mess.

What you're getting at would be more along the lines of calling the F14 a "gooney bird" or a "turkey" and the F4 a "Rhino". As opposed to what they were designated.

Its tradition to refer to an airplane by something other than the number designation that the manufacture gave it. In WWII even each airplane had its own name. Ever heard of the "Enola Gay"? It was a B-29 Stratofortress.
Apples to bowling balls, not EVERY B-29 was referred to as such, not every P51 is referred to as "Glamorous Glennis", "Old Crow", whatever.

LOL.

To most people, just being a pilot is a pretty cool job, so I don't get the "trying to sound cool". We are pretty cool IMO.

Do you show up at parties with your uniform on and pretend you didn't have time to change?

I think about half the KC-135 fleet now has a basket-pod under each wingtip, so they can do boom from the center, and probe-and-drogue under each wing, every flight.

Good mod...the KC-10 can do both, but not simultaneously (they are right next to each other).

Supposedly, the only reason the whole fleet was not modified: they ran out of money.

Seriously?

And I heard they replaced the Nav with an FMS and don't have water injection takeoffs anymore. Built in the 50s and still flying.
