Thanks! Gives me some hope after all. It's just been a bit discouraging because I thought the point of an internship was to give you a leg up on the rest of the competition for at least an interview. I guess That free lunch I got everyday was my thanks. :)

You got free lunch?? Damn us CAL interns had to make money on the side to be able to pay for those..

As a former UAL intern (TK), I think fight club would be a good hiring tool. (Winning not as important as creativity and style points!)

I never really gave it any thought, but you guys are all willing to work for free?

Better than P2F I guess.

Maybe

That's why they are given preferential hiring.

FWIW, I'm pretty sure the great UAL/CAL intern battle went down like this:

Doesn't sound like you understand what an internship is. Whether paid or unpaid, the primary benefit is for the intern, not the company. (There is a slew of labor case law on that topic.). An airline college internship always was, and still is, a highly competitive and coveted position. If it was simply volunteering to make copies and fetch coffee for free, then anyone could sign up for it. But that's not the case, as you have to be a competitive applicant from a college or university that participates in the program. In the case of the United internship, the benefits that flow to the intern far outweigh any considerations of a semester without pay.

Last time I made coffee at the office, I was getting paid.

I think if I was an HR department, I would probably not hire anyone who interned, anywhere. Too me, it would show the desire to do ANYTHING, even work for free, to jump in front of the Q.
