from Howard's Letter

What are you doing about four-day trips, as well as all the deadheading that seems to be occurring?

We are aware of the increased volume of deadheads and are looking at this very closely. An analysis is under way to determine the cost of four-day pairings in the day of operation. We continue to work with the ALPA SSC on the trip length distribution. In the fall, we will commence the process of moving toward right sizing our bases so we can reduce the amount of flying that is forced into a particular base. This should help with trip distribution.

Let the games (displacements) begin!!

What a bag of air.

3+ years into the merger and their just now figuring out that manpower might be askew? Giving the benefit of doubt, they've had the UPA to deal with for the last 18 months, but that's more than enough time IMO.

History will show how hopelessly in over their heads this management is, but like you say, enjoy the displacements!

FA's the other day were sent out a message talking about this. They're planning on October for moving people around.

Is there any rumor mill what that might look like? Let me guess grow EWR

From what ive heard "right sizing" the bases means right sizing the equipment in each base. Instead of having a huge 320 base in ORD, DEN, and IAD and a huge 737 base in EWR and IAH, they want to "right size" these bases. They want to spread the 737s out system wide as the 320 is. In other words, grow the old 320 bases with the 73, and grow the old 73 bases with the 320. Thats what I heard but who knows.

So how does the displacement language work? Do they have to provide us positive space to and from the new base for a certain amount of time? Hotels? Any incentive to voluntary bid a new base? I live in base now and not going to move, but wondering if I get bumped out or even get bumped down to reserve and want to be a line holder in another base, what will my options be. Also do you keep the same vacation days/Golden Days off if you are displaced?

If only that info was written down someplace---like a document that was signed by UAL and ALPA.....

+1

Read up and return with specific questions. And yes, there is plenty of apparently contradictory and confusing language in the UPA.

:)
