It's yet to happen for me. Buddy of mine just got off probation, didn't have a single captain pick up a single beer/meal all year. Not that anyone expects it, but the tradition is def dead near as anyone in EWR can tell. Feel free to correct if I'm wrong.

If you were based in ORD on the Bus or 76T….you would be treated like gold.
We always made sure that our new pilots had a warm reception during their probationary year.
There are always going to be the cheap captains who won't participate…but that's the minority.
Welcome aboard!

I was based in ORD as a new hire and had maybe 10% of captains pick up the tab during my probation period... Not as predominate as many think. I personally think its a great Idea and plan on doing it when I'm a Captain.

I was IAD based on the Bus as 1/2 wing in 2007-2008. 99% of the Capts I flew with bought at least one really nice dinner during the trip, and over half would buy at least 2 dinners depending on if we even had time to go out. Without fail, 99% would not let me buy any of the drinks. Most would talk about the half-wing tradition and tell stories from their first year at United. The 1% guy was just ugly about it. He was the only guy I flew with that was over 60 and he knew I was getting furloughed in a few months. That 1% cAPT never offered a beer, bone from a chicken wing, or even any words of encouragement.....he was too busy celebrating his "4 more years" like Obama's freeloading mother-inlaw. Always has to be one in every group, but it sounds like EWR might be a cesspool for em'.

I don't think the tradition was as ingrained at CAL as it was at UAL.
I did have a few CAL Captains buy me beer, but they were the exception. Maybe 10-15% I'd guess?
I had 100% of the UAL Captains I met buy me drinks as a half-winger. Even if I'd just met them at the hotel check in.
This isn't a slam either! I just think the traditions are different and I'd like to see the traditional UAL model followed.

I'm EWR based on the 320 and have probably gained 10 lbs from the free beer and food. It's a great tradition and I can't wait to pass it on. A little advice: no one can see your half wing on your badge. Put it on your tie!

I agree with this assessment. I'm about to finish year one on the 737 in Newark. The Continental guys don't really follow this tradition, as it was a Legacy United thing. I've had a few guys get my beer for me, but that was the exception rather than the rule. Not complaining though, just glad to be here.
As an Ex-Con, I'm embarrassed by this.
