I have it on very good authority that both the job fair and the M&G will increase your chances of being called. For example in my class all civilian new hires had accomplished the M&G. I suspect nearly everyone had both. For me, I did a M&G in Nov. 13, but waited on the job fair til late Aug 14, I was called almost immediately after the job fair.

If UA is where you want to be, try to get both.

Let's suppose your application is ranked 4,000. It may take 3-4 years to get an interview. Nobody can say for sure, but it certainly seems like the guys who do the m&g and job fairs get called sooner. If completing those events moves your app up to number 1,000 and you get hired within a year, think about what that will do for you in the long run. You'll be able to get holidays and weekends off quicker, bid larger equipment quicker, and bid Captain quicker. If a Captain makes $100,000 more than an FO, and you're a Captain for 2-3 years more than you would've been had you just "waited your turn", your career earnings will be $300,000 more.

Sure there are lots of variables that will also come in to play, but ask ANY pilot what it would do for them if they could jump the seniority list by 2000 numbers.

I think he was asking why the company bothers with the m&g and job fairs, not why the applicant does it. We realize people want to jump over other applicants but why does the company bother if they have a pool of very qualified applicants.

Because some of us really want to be there! United want's to hire people that show the most interest in them. These opportunities allow us to stand out among thousands of applicants with the same qualifications. Also, at the WAI conference I made a lot of connections and really enjoyed the experience. You also get to see some differences between the companies to see who might be the best fit for you.

For example I thought Delta would be great but I discovered that they have little respect for 135/91 pilots and at United they were very receptive to my background and told me I would be an asset in their well rounded pilot group. American told me the same so now I rank those two companies above Delta in my personal career goals.

It's just another discriminator, but it sounds like a significant one. Everyone wants the job, but some want it more. It helps United narrow the pool significantly.

Nothing wrong with M&G's. If I were to recommend something to those on the outside looking in I'd recommend:

1. Spend the money on an airline interview prep; it's money well spent.

2. Find someone in the Air Guard reserves and ask them to copy the "United Interview "After Action Report"". I was actually floored by the amount of information contained in that file. ex: I interviewed on 1/1/15 with an HR guy Named Steve R and two UAL line Captains named Ace and slick. I was asked what would I do if......I answered I would do........I don't think Ace like that answer and he asked me to explain ........I should have said this.....

Anyone here have access to this file/information? I'd be very interested to take a look...

Wrt to the getting friends and family hired comment, as an IT company with wings it would be easy to add a marker to an application where an employee could endorse it.

Syd gets it. I thought we were in the job of hiring the most qualified applicants. I am well aware that there are many pilots who want to fly at United but I think we are shorting ourselves If we give a boost in application status for the job fair/meet and greet crowd.

What if everyone went to the job fairs, then what?

plenty of qualified people applying....lets say you have three people with equal qualifications and you offer them a non required meeting to have coffee and talk about the job. Two people show up, one is very casual and comes across as cavalier and a little flippant, the other shows up decently dressed and has a great attitude. Who would you hire out of the three?

Easy. Why waste money sending United people to job fairs when they can all, including applicant no 3, have a get together for an interview at TK? If they are successful with the interview they can continue with the employment process.

That would be an insane amount of interviews and you would have to hire more staff to do it. The cost would be much higher I would expect and also everyone would be put on positive space tickets to come to the interview, eating into revenue. The conferences and the M&G are a way of thinning the heard of thousands with very similar qualifications on paper. As I have been saying the company sees who wants it the most by who shows up and how they represent themselves. It makes sense in today's hiring when you have 10,000 applications.

They don't, and that's the descrimintor between them and the other 10,000.
