I hear they are designed with shear pins. When you drag one down the runway or over the top of a piece of ground equipment du jour, it cleanly snaps off.

150,000 LBS will shear anything clean off. The question is, how much does it cost to replace. LOL

Turns out SWA tested the winglet strength last night in Oakland (though not the scimitar) 2 Southwest Planes Clip Wings At Oakland International Airport « CBS San Francisco
