Southwest and Delta seem to hire the "best" across all employee groups...solid professional maturity and clear positive energy.

I spent a lot of years at United and United isn't as bad as the press makes it out to be. However, it also is not the best. The people here are decent, they just aren't the best.

FWIW, I never worked at SWA but I did spend a stint at DAL.

IMHO, it's not the people, it's the leadership (or lack thereof.)

DAL is kicking a$$ in 2015 with the same employees they had when they were "meh" (financially and operationally). Ditto for CAL in the 90's until Bethune showed up.

UCH has the best route structure and a decent fleet plan but has been missing the element that gets line employees motived to excel.

I recently did an 8 leg international trip on Delta (military travel, didn't get to pick my booking) so I got a pretty good glimpse of both the domestic and international product Delta offers and I have to say it wasn't a whole lot different than ours. In some places it was a little better, in some places it was a little worse but over all if you painted the planes the same colors and the crew wore the same uniforms, you'd be hard pressed to find a difference. They fact that they are crushing us in financial performance leads me to only one conclusion, and that's what you posted above in bold.

We have the route structure, resources and people to be number one....

After spending many years at LUAL and a few years at the New United I take exception for all the fine people I've known and flown with. We've had some bad apples but they don't last once found out. RECENT evidence of this can be found with the departure of JP and shortly BS. If you didn't imply disrespect maybe you should revise your comment about the United employees not being the best, otherwise ............

No disrespect...a number of fine individuals...I just don't think the majority are the best as measured by the industry competition in Delta and Southwest.

My much younger brother is a 30 year mileage customer out of San Francisco. He describes United as "decent mediocrity"..."excellent network"..."so-so interaction on normal days"..."bottom-of-the-barrel when things go wrong." He says the network keeps him.

Being on the north side of the flight deck door, many pilots miss a major portion of the business.
