Default Smisek off the hook?

Just read this somewhat cryptic news release. The company sent one out that was similar.

United Continental Holdings, Inc. reported Junely 14, that it has reached a resolution in the form of a Non-Prosecution Agreement with the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey (the “USAO”) in connection with its Port Authority investigation. Under the agreement, the USAO will not prosecute United in connection with United’s establishment of a flight between Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey and Columbia Metropolitan Airport in South Carolina, provided that United complies with the agreement for two years. In addition, United has agreed to pay a financial penalty of $2.25 million.

My interpretation of that was that UCH wouldn't be prosecuted. I'd think individuals still could be. At least I'm hoping that is the case.

Good reading. Jeffery is a scum bag, but the level of pressure the PA put on is pathetic. Then again we takin bout Dirty Jerzy. That hanger and the jobs it brought weren't coming unless The Chairman got his personal RJ. While I'm glad this got Jeff canned, I'm not sure Gordon, Herb, or even Pat Patterson would have done differently.

So, for small $2.25m surcharge to the $120m cost, UAL gets a completely revamped EWR restaurant and food concessions program. I'd they they're pretty happy with that. Maybe it was planned all along. JS wants to leave so the board makes a deal. If you slam through a shady deal to upgrade EWR concessions and convert the entire terminal in less than seven days before anyone can stop it, we will settle out of court, pay a tiny fine, and you can leave with your golden parachute.

Airport management company OTG has unveiled its designs for Newark’s new United terminal, and if one thing is certain, it’s that the much-maligned hub is about to become one of the country’s coolest places to fly through. So how is OTG taking the EWR from flop to fab? Well:

1. Design by David Rockwell: The famed architect is just one of the masterminds behind the terminal’s look and feel, but his lobby-like lounge, situated in the terminal’s main artery, is a total stunner, with sleek mesh metal curtains, silver-plated globe chandeliers, and plush seating areas next to an onyx bar. It’s about as sexy as an airport gets.

2. Rotating restaurant concepts: A main dining hall called the Global Bazaar will contain more restaurants than meet the eye. In a smart and pioneering move, spaces that house breakfast-oriented concepts in the morning (Poppy’s bagel shop; Eggy Weggy) will morph into lunch- and dinner-friendly options as the day progresses (think Notorious P.I.G., a BBQ spot by North Carolina’s Elizabeth Carmel, and Casciano’s, an Italian sandwich shop by Torrisi chef Mario Carbone).

Sure, some fliers will be disappointed to miss their chance at Carbone’s porchetta sandwich if they arrive off-hours, but this is a revolutionary way to think about airport dining that we can really get behind—especially if it means that we’re no longer limited to long lines at the single spot serving egg sandwiches before a morning flight.

3. More than a handful of exciting chef partnerships: Mario Carbone is far from the only chef on Newark’s marquee. Also on the list: Food Network’s Alex Guarnaschelli, French master Alain Ducasse, The Waverly Inn’s John Delucie, chocolatier Jacques Torres, Top Chef alum Dale Talde, taco wiz Alex Stupak, and New York’s queen of falafel, Einat Admony. They’re among 24 chefs—most with serious food cred—spearheading 55 dining options throughout the terminal.

4. A high-tech touch: OTG is deploying over 6,000 iPads throughout the terminal, which travelers can use to browse menus, order their food, scan their boarding passes, or just browse the web. What’s more, United frequent fliers can use their points to pay for purchases in the terminal—another notable first.

Totally agree. There are plenty of good reputations in the business world (JS excluded) that only stayed that way because the various swamps they had to swim around in were never drained.

Aviation from the very beginning has been a bit dodgy. While I am hopeful, and happy, if El Jeffe gets Bravo Slapped, far worse things have happened. He just got caught.

That disclaimer is not to be confused with a rationalization for him being a DB. It is, what it is.

William A. "Pat" Patterson (October, 1899 — June 13, 1980) was the President of United Airlines from 1934 until 1966.

He was a bank official who loaned some money to United.

Default There was no intent!

JS shouldn't go to jail, it would be too hard to prove his "intent" to do something wrong!
