Slightly off topic but didn't want to start a new thread. Is there such thing as too many LORs? BK told me 2 years ago 10+ but have heard more recently they want less. Thanks.

 

Don't think there is such a thing as too many. However BK stated that after 10 you don't get any additional "points." So any more than that doesn't hurt you but it doesn't really help either. Also he said they are looking for someone who can attest to your character and put more emphasis on that rather than hounding every guy that rides in the jumpseat.

 

It's random. Very, very random. Luck is involved. There are guys with fewer quals than me, who did less networking, who were hired first. There are guys with more quals than me, who do more networking, who are still waiting for an interview. The only things people getting hired have in common seems to be that they did at least some networking (via WAI, OBAP etc) and have put substantial effort into perfecting their airlineapps.com. Quals, volunteerism, GPA, and degrees only matter if you represent them in airlineapps, and airlineapps only matters if someone looks at it. So prioritize in this order 1) WAI/OBAP/NGPA conferences 2) airlineapps.com 3) actual quals such as LCA. It sucks. I had to take many hot showers during the process, but here I am. To think I owe 80% of it to luck still makes me ill. It's a fair process, like rolling a dice is fair. Good luck.

 

If you are reading this thread, then I think you're are on the right track.

To say that any of us got hired by pure luck is doing a disservice to those trying to get on. Its an understandable thing we tell our friends who haven't got the call yet because we don't want to make them feel bad, or undeserving, but it just isn't true.

I'm going to insert here for the sake of the thousands of frustrated pilots trying to get jobs: I'M NOT SAYING I DESERVE IT MORE (or better qualified) THAN OTHERS....

I am saying I took the time to find out what gave me the best odds, and then tried to capitalize in each area. I have no idea which (if any specific thing I did) put me over the top, but something did. So, although this process is anything but transparent, I'm definitely an advocate of the proactive approach rather than just believing you have no control over it.

On a less tactful note: almost every other $100K+ a year job requires effort to get promotions, yet many line pilots are frustrated that the majors look for investments into their career (IE check airmen work, special projects, union work, volunteering, etc). Nobody will argue that its all hard to balance sometimes, but if you were in any other job, you'd be expected to compete for a promotion. Just my perspective.

I really don't want to come off as a jerk, I just hope that guys/gals out there don't let this "its all chance" mentality stop them from working hard to get hired.
