Day 1 guy. Crickets. Regional CA, mil, no mil flying. 7000TT, 2 types, 2 degrees, volunteer, union safety office, clean rap sheet, plenty of internal recs, 2 job fairs. Still trying to crack the code.

I will continue to stand by my statements. To be clear this is a NEW development with United. So, the fact that people are finishing IOE etc who are reservists with 10 years to go is irrelevant. Let's give it some time and look at the hiring trends from here on out.

Look, I understood that I was going to take some heat for my post before I clicked submit. If I were a United pilot or if United was my #1 choice I would not be happy. I don't blame you.

To shed just a little bit more light on the subject B.K. was overheard saying that he has a report on how many current United pilots are out on mil leave right now. Apparently, it is not a small number and there is plenty of evidence that reservists and guardsmen are at least perceived to be abusing the system.

So, you guys can call me an idiot and hate what I'm saying all you would like. I hope that the information that I have is wrong, but I'm just passing along what I've got. I think it would be more appropriate to be mad at reservists and guardsmen who are abusing the system and ruining it for the rest. (Ever seen someone get hired and then immediately drop 3-5 years of mil leave? Might be legal but I would argue unethical.) Or, be mad at United for screening out reservists. Either way I will continue to state the data that I have. What if I'm right? Wouldn't those who could be affected by this rather know that this is possibly happening rather than sitting around with their fingers crossed forever waiting for the call?

I'm going to mark this thread and watch the data. Somewhat connected with interview invites to anecdotally assess your claim. We shall see.

Doesn't USERRA protect against reservists against this?

This argument is demonstrably false but let me ask you this: You say your friend has direct evidence of a crime against military service members by a Fortune 100 company and instead of doing anything your friend just casually lets you and only you know and you go and post it on a web forum?

That's your story?

If this is true both you and especially your 'friend' are cowards (at best) and are part of the problem. So, why don't you either stop making stuff up or maybe follow your duty (I'm assuming you and your imaginary friend are Vets) and report this crime.

USERRA applies to employees that are also reservists. There is no USERRA protection for applicants that have not been hired...at least that is how I read the law. (I'm not a lawyer)

The DAL class action lawsuit about USERRA violations was filed by employees of DAL.

I'm not endorsing or corroborating the "policy" that Snaplock refers to but there are definitely examples of military members who have gotten on various seniority lists and then dropped mil leave for extended periods after probation to avoid "low pay". I have several contacts that are doing exactly that...and though legal...not ethical (voluntarily requesting orders etc - vice involuntarily mobilized) There are even board members suggesting this tactic in the most current "Should I get out now" thread in the military section.

FWIW - I am a day 1 guy. Retiring in early 2018 and not expecting a call until I get 121 experience.

You are making a lot of assumptions with this post and putting words into my mouth. I never once said that this was from a friend. I also never said that I was the only one that was told. Go back and read what I have written and you will see what I am saying.

Additionally, prove that all of this would be a crime! I'm not 100% sure of the legality but I lean toward believing that if these actions by United are in fact happening then they will be almost impossible to prove. With thousands of applications in how do you PROVE that a company is screening out a particular group? Also, there are no government protections that apply here. A company can choose to invite whomever they would like for an interview. They are not obligated to invite any particular group.

Finally, go sit in a dark and quiet room and think long and hard about where this information might be coming from. Think about it. I'll give you a hint. It's not speculation.

One of us may need to sit in a dark and quiet room and think long an hard, but it ain't those of us with the hard facts on our side that Mil guys have been and continue to be getting hired, it is the one that thinks he (and others) have been given some deep dark secret about United. Again, I have known Bill Kennedy for a long time and he and the huge number of us that are former military (including many interview Captains) would not stand for this! I know Bill is getting ready to retire, but whoever replaces him (veteran or not) will still be working in a division that has a huge percentage of military folks in it.

If some dumb___ was stupid enough to ever even mention this as an idea, he would be laughed out of the program. The very idea that this would be a plan is so stupid I can't believe you would continue to defend it as reasonable. As others stated, United is a Fortune 100 company and even if some idiot thought this was legal, do you really think UA would risk the public backlash and internal backlash to institute such a stupid plan?

Consider that for all their faults Howard Attarian (VP of Flight Operations) and Brian Quigley (System Chief Pilot) are both veterans, do you think they would sign off on this?

Let us know what you think after coming out of that dark place?

You said before that this was "new information," so just exactly how new? It would have to be newer than the end of the current interview cycle, because I know a few, and several here know a few that have been hired in the last several weeks.

You're spouting malarkey, man. Take your bitterness elsewhere. Maybe that showed through when you sat down with someone in SFO and that's why you haven't been called.
