6 is correct... but most 1Ks travel enough that they use them for own flights... too valuable to give away.

GPUs are Global Premier Upgrades, which can be used for upgrading on international travel. They are earned by 1Ks and UGSs.

GPUs expire at the end of January and elites get a new batch of 6 GPUs starting on 1 February; chances are that a bunch of elites are trying to use their brand new batch of GPUs. They also get 2 more GPUs for every 50K miles they fly in a year.

During one of my furloughs, I was a 1K who travelled to Europe a bit.

Thanks for all the info, we bailed on Sydney, that's a tough nut to crack on a pass.

SYD is tough this time of year. If you can get around the Australian vacations schedule/New Years, you can probably make it, but very little chance in Polaris until around June.

Timing is everything. A few years ago, my daughter and her friend flew down and back in C. Mid Dec going down, mid-Jan return.

I don't know the best time of year to make the trek so I can't offer any advice.

Since it was SYD, I can understand why so many were trying to upgrade. That's a long flight.

You may want to discuss with crews that fly there all of the time to find the best time of year.
