ok..more questions.
I was playing with this similar concept last night with lets just say...less than stellar results.
What were your settings that you were using?
I was trying ISO 400 and ISO 800 and in aperture mode the lowest aperture setting I can go is 2.8. With aperture set to 2.8 it suggest a shutter speed sometimes 4 seconds or so.
With that setting the lighting looks fine and the cockpit comes out good but in a moving plane I cant possibly keep the camera still enough for that long to take a clear picture.
Tweaking the settings I can get a 1/5 shutter speed which helps the stability issue but no longer blurs the lights since the shutter is a bit too fast.

Tripod my friend , its the only way with such a slow shutter speed
