Antennas are not as sexy as airplanes but they are impressive. Down on the horizon, this one could heat the fillings in your teeth at five miles - or at least that's the story.

I have flown over the VLA many times and I've always wanted to see it from the ground.
Great pics.
How long did it take to drive there?

2.5 hours from Albuquerque. You take I-25 to Soccoro, hang a west on 60, and drive that to a couple of miles west of Magdalena and the VLA is near there. It's god's country out there, it is very soothing to the soul. I would recommend the trip to anyone. Make sure to fill up on fuel before leaving Albuquerque.

Do you need to have an appointment or setup something beforehand? Or can you just roll up and ask to walk around?

Nice shots. Keep in mind that these are essentially radio telescopes looking back in time. Looking back to the time that a pure energy the size of a baseball, as current theory holds, created our entire known universe. Looking for the thrower of the baseball and the start of the game.

Here it is, the entire cosmos in a wall-mountable poster (add $4 for a custom frame):

Pretty sure this was the guy who threw the first ball, first dibs on having found him. He just looks someone who could have done it plus nobody ever said that he didn't.
