They have a couple of dishes roped off to use for the self-tour. You can walk around those dishes but all the others are off-limits. My friend and I were surprised that we could go to the maintenance building and take a picture of that, but we could. The place is kind of ghostly looking and they have not spent any real money on it in decades. It is like stepping back into 1982, a bit unnerving. There was not one soul on the premises at the time, when we were taking our self-tour although it was open. There are a lot of old army trucks sitting around and rusty equipment. BTW, the movie Contact with Jodie Foster had several scenes shot there, but they did not call it the VLA in the movie and the dishes do not produce sound, they produce radio images. Also, there are only 27 dishes not the hundred or so they made with special effects in the Contact movie.
