Now that's a blast from the past! I actually know the guy on the left in that photo. Flew with him before he got hired at Continental and after he got furloughed. He told me the real story behind the commercial.
That photo was taken at sunrise in front of the main hangar at Stapleton. He said not even a bird was chirping when the director started running around with a bull horn yelling "QUIET...QUIET ON THE SET!!!!"
Later, they were filming the pilots driving the the Mercury Marquis on some roads in the mountains and one of the Captains drove it into a ditch and lost a whole day of shooting.

The jury; 50 commercial airline pilots-professionals with acute sensitivity to motion, vibration and noise.
The majority rated the Mercury smoother, quieter, easier to handle, more comfortable to drive.
Also, would a poll of 50 European pilots have the same results?
Given that ours was once a respected profession in the public's eyes, that ad was probably effective for the times. Nowadays, people couldn't care less about a car company advertising that one of their models has the endorsement of airline pilots.

The airline pilot was definitely a complete hero in those days and people thought pilots were emblems of all good things. That has changed a lot, but I still occasionally meet people who hold attitudes of pilots as special. If you look closely you can see traces of the old attitudes in Hollywood movies and of course the media loves a "Sully" when they get one.
