One exception to the expired rule/exemption.
If you were working for company A when you took the (now expired) written test, an now work for company B, some examiners will require you to have retaken the test since you last started employment.

I'm sure there may have been confused examiners in the past, but I suspect the airlines have long since resolved that sort of confusion. What are they going to do, let you go all the way through upgrade training, and then on checkride day, oops nevermind? That examiner would find himself doing something else pretty quick. Also any airline will pre-screen their upgrade candidates BEFORE class convenes...whatever they want you to have, they will have already verified that you have it.

At one time the regs did require continuous employment by a 121 carrier to extend the validity of the ATP (and F/E) writtens. The Federal Register is only searchable to 1994 with the earliest major change to 61 in 1997. At that time the reg read as it does know, that at the time of the the practical test, the testee must be employed by a 121 carrier. If there are still D/Es saying it has to be continuous employment from written to check ride, they are wwaaayyy out of date.

But I think you may have missed the boat with the "old" ATP written requirements, you may now have to acquire additional training. Hopefully someone familiar with the new deets can chime in.

Right before 61.39(b) says "employed" it says
"may take the practical test with an expired knowledge test only if the applicant passed the knowledge test after July 31, 2014, and is employed:"
