How long does it take to hold 787? My friend is obsessed with that airplane and has a dream of flying at one day. Just trying to get an idea how long it would take to hold it.

Also, he is currently at a ULCC with almost 5 years of seniority. Curious about the vacation process accrual to see how long it would take to get break even.

787 is at least 6 years right now, I forget vacation accrual, but I know it gets to 3 weeks a year pretty fast.

It’s 21 days after a year with the company, prorated to 1.75 days/month if less than one year… so yeah, it gets to 3 weeks a year “pretty fast”.

What is a typical 787 FO schedule like? Does international go junior or senior? How many days off can you get approximately on the widebody? Do you get called often on reserve?

Again, this is for someone who is aspiring to fly 787 someday, and is making a strategic decision to go to a company that has 787 fleet, with a potential to fly one day.

Thanks!

Seems like a misguided strategy. Beyond that, no one can accurately guess what WB flying will look like in the 5+ years it takes you to get to the plane, let alone the 10+ years to hold ANY schedule on it. I’ve been here for 9 years and can only hold a schedule in NY on the 777, not even close anywhere else.

If things go as they are, I can see wide body FO positions coming down. There's still more 787's on order. But I'm not basing my decision to come to AA on that.

I agree completely but I’m just a messenger, and appreciate any info I can pass on to this candidate.

Another concern came up is having to cover 3 airports if based in LGA as a newhire. Is that accurate? How is it possible on year one pay when one-way Uber ride is around 100$ in that area? Does AA help with commuting costs at all?

Thanks again for the input!

Yes, if you are "LGA" based you will have to cover all three airports. You wont get any help from the company with commuting costs. You can get to EWR using public transportation, it's been few years, but it used to run around $50, and take 2-3 hours. The flight attendants have some scheduled vans between airports, in the past you could ride if there was space, but you cant count on that.

Chris Hoogstad, JFK/LGA/EWR FA base manager, has indicated the early morning vans to EWR are actually paid for by the crew scheduling department to help alleviate the difficulties with early morning sign-ins at EWR. They belong to neither Flight Service nor Flight and should be on a first come, first serve basis.

A myth that the early morning late night vans are fo Flight Attendants. I got this from Union page.
