No beards for J/S due to oxygen degradation
#11

They didn’t change it due to O2, that’s a separate article. They just don’t want us to have it. Funny thing is someone mentioned FA’s, someone mentioned looking professional. FA’s are allowed to have them. Is this an admission by management that Pilots are more Professional than FA’s? Of a higher importance? They’ve hammered the whole “team member” concept for years. Now They are subjecting Pilots to a higher standard.

"FOM CHANGE – BEARDS: Effective Sept. 13, the American Airlines FOM will change to no longer allow any FDJ occupant with a beard or goatee on mainline flights. This change was unilaterally imposed by management. APA was never involved in or formally notified about this impending change. Please direct any questions to your flight office."
Are the 70s porno mustaches still allowed?

Theres a group at AA pushing to change appearance policy to allow short and neatly trimmed beards. This is old school managment's attempt to push this idea further away, not realizing that FA's have beards and they have to utilize the JS oxygen in the flight deck during pilot out of flight deck protocols.

Maybe they're fully prepared to allow beards, but intend to put on some theater and stall in hopes of extracting negotiating concessions.
Although they could enhance their recruiting by giving away beards for free, they'd get a few die-hard beard aficionados from 91/135 and maybe Air Canada. The Canucks get paid half of what we do, but they don't have to shave!

Management has the prerogative to dictate professional uniform standards, unless otherwise negotiated in the CBA. Don't know why they need to rationalize their decision.

There’s a group of AA pilots pressuring the company to allow facial hair for pilots. They’ve submitted some complaints to the HR folks, and it seems HR agrees it’s a silly and outdated policy. HR keeps punting the decision to the VP of Flight as a “safety issue”. That VP is basically kicking the can on a decision until after he retires and it’ll be the next VP’s call. He told the AA beards group that a Fed/secret service/etc with a beard will have to shave before getting flightdeck access. SMH.

APA isn’t negotiating for beards.

There is no rationalization for it, it makes absolutely zero sense other than some boomers who are still clinging to their old cranky ways. It's not for safety, and it's not for professionalism... otherwise they wouldn't let the FA's have facial hair.
