Those 13 guys are about $1M poorer than they would have been had they retired a month earlier.

edit: disregard: sounds like the 1 Nov guys got hosed out of their lump sum too.

Negative... anyone who retired prior to Nov 29 gets the lump sum. AFTER Nov 29, they can only get the annuity... for now.

IMHO, they are the smartest guys in the airline industry.

JP,

It's not as though none of them were warned. Sad.

Some people will never be able to let go. It's sad but some allow this career to define them as a person and retirement for these is a scary thought. They'd rather give up financial security than give up their identity. Unfortunately, retirement is coming one way or another. You might as well get out at a time that lets you enjoy your retirement with some semblance of financial dignity.

Just an opinion, but you would think these folks are of an age where they have no strings, kids in college etc. Why did'nt they all take the money and run to overseas carriers that are paying big bucks right now, they should certainly have the type ratings for it.

I bet they get the lump. The plan is still in effect and all plan rules should be in effect. The chapter 13 filing changes non of that until you get a court order or the PBGC steps in and declares the fund in distress. As far as I know that has not happened. I suspect in the end they will get paid.
