No fancy WX yet. Supposedly coming. They pick up inflight WiFi with ease. The thing I'm most looking forward to are enroute charts.
Like everything in the airline world, ultra-conservatism rules, which is why a guy in a biz jet has better stuff than we do. But it's still a massive leap beyond 40lb of freaking paper. I haven't encountered anyone who has lost one yet. AFAIK the company will replace it once, no q. asked. About 2% of the guys I've talked to think the company is NSA-like, and that they are reading all your emails. Uh, no. I'm not going to browse drug or child porn stuff, don't do it anyhow. And yes, you can secure it in many ways if you feel the need. |

Foreverfo-Do you guys have access to wifi for weather on yours? I've heard that we won't. Does any airline? My brother in law is a corporate pilot and what they have is amazing.

I carry my own iPad for personal use, so I'll keep my photos, music, donkey porn, etc, on that and off the work device.

Word from our West program guy is no 121 operators are allowed to use wifi while in flight but the Feds are slowly working on it.

I've talked a lot about this, so one more comment then I'll shut up. :D

About a year ago, I flew with a CKA who was one of the leaders in the iPad program. I asked him about WiFi. What he said - and this applies only to AA: "You are not authorized to use the internet on the flight deck, for now. But spread the word... Management can and does connect GoGo (WiFi) usage to cockpit personnel. Right now, they aren't doing anything about it, but if they decide they don't like you, or there is a problem, it becomes ammunition at the hearing." FWIW. Cannot wait to get rid of current AMR managers. |

"Legal" access - no. But the hardware works, and I have flown with guys that do use it extensively, thinking "They (management) don't care and probably can't even tell." But here's the problem... To use the AA internet (GoGo) requires a credit card. Plenty of pilots have GoGo accounts that they use when commuting and deadheading, but it's not hard to compare and correlate a GoGo log in, when the person is on the flight paperwork as a working crew member.

USAir iPads
Can you imagine the repercussions of the industries first cell phone (call) related accident or incident?
I recall a few train operator that derailed trains due to texting engineers. |
Here's an idea, just use the iPad for viewing your pubs and charts that the company provides....problem solved.
