If they wanted it, they would ask for it. If it was a useful optional item, everybody else would be doing it. You're asking for questions and not listening to the answers.

As far as how they decide who gets called over others, anybody who is not on the hiring board is just taking an educated guess. My personal opinion is that there is some sort of algorithm that scores your accomplishments and elevates certain profiles so that the actual resume is read by a human. There's no telling how much weight is given to something like Instructor Hours versus attending WIA, but I'd wager money that the font and cover letter on your resume don't mean jack.

I don't know about negative points, but I have a feeling it would either go straight to the shredder or not even be looked at.

If they don't ask for it, don't do it. It's pretty simple. Remember, your app is screened by a computer and an HR company first. They are sifting through thousands of applicants. You will get the call if your app meets whatever wickets they've set up. It is not like a corporate gig where a chief pilot is manually scoring each app.

I think you guys are all over thinking it. Does it help? Probably not, does it hurt? Probably not.

I'm old school, I've written a cover letter for every job I've ever applied to. I also refuse to use a resume longer than 1 page. With the airlines, I didn't submit the letter with my app, but had a custom letter for every airline at the job fairs I attended. I also printed one up to turn in with the rest of my stuff at US Airways. It was not required. The guy I gave it to, read it, and it sparked a conversation for what that's worth. I'm not familiar with AA's hiring though.

It won't come up at any point in the hiring process at AA. Once you meet their computer screening criteria, you'll be invited for a video interview and then if you pass, a face to face interview.

On the day of the interview, all they want to see is the specific list of items they ask for. I had an entire binder made to give to them (including an updated resume) and they didn't want it. They just want exactly what they ask you to bring nothing more or less

It's not over-thinking, just following directions. Do what they say. It's not hard.

...and for the face to face portion itself they didn't allow me to bring anything with me so anything I brought was left behind I the waiting area. Only thing they had on the table when it was my turn was my logbooks. Great process overall!

Don't forget Cathay Pacific. My hardest interview to date. The definition of anal.

"Why did you not find employment after 11 September?"

I can't post what I was thinking when I heard that question.
