Default Deviate from deadhead?

At Delta we can deviate from either front-end or back-end deadheads from or to another city of our choice. Is there a similar policy at American? My father in law is an American pilot and has never tried this (30 year career living in base). If so, how does it work?

LAA side...

On the front end, to work, you notifyscheduling and they create an A1D listing to the first working leg

On the back end, you asktracking for release, and they create an A12 from the city of the last live leg to wherever.

Then, you import PNR and check in, selecting the Upgrade Listing radio button if desired. Not really necessary for the A1 but is smooths the process for the A12, due to some ancient SABRE issue.

Arado,
They can not make you work that leg you are scheduled to DH on. APA has come out with several emails with guidance on this situation and get informed. If you are scheduled to DH and then they want to have you fly that leg, that is considered a reassignment, therefore you must be given 10 hours advanced notice for this new assignment. If a you are ordered to fly it by the chief pilot on duty, then do it. Document the entire event and give it to your reps. Remember it our responsibility to confirm fit for duty on each leg we will be acting as a crewmember. So if your are not properly rested then you should follow the fatigue policy.

If you have already blocked in-before reassignment, isn't that the end of the FDP?

jcountry,

If you have not received a reassignment prior to commencement of the sterile period, as determined by the CA, you are done! You do not have to go fly an additional assignment that FDP. If you are a reserve pilot, and have additional days on reserve, then you are required to check you schedule upon arrival. They will routinely assign you are RAP, reserve availibilty period, or you may have flying for the next day. I hope this helps.
Are you with AA? If your are, then go to the APA website for more in depth information. Our contract compliance committee is doing a great job of getting info like this out. It is always worth the read.

So let me get this straight, can they assign you additional flying for your current DP, if it's done before the commencement of the sterile period? If so, that pretty much sucks. Bad enough that we have to check our schedule for the next day now, but this would be terrible. Right now (LUS for the rest of this month at least). There is no reassignment by ACARs, we don't have to check our schedule at block in or at 1500 HBT. When we get done...we are done and don't have to answer the phone for 12 hours. Matter of fact, I will already have my JS booked, and head home as quickly as possible.

It's an historical AA tradition, like they can fly reserves up until noon on your first day off, or move some of your days off, or assign you extra flying during or at the end of your trip, or ....

See, I don't just defend APA for the fun of it
