"ALOHA and Tanker I heard you guys had not received your letters yet after the interview. Did you get the call without receiving your letter."

As for me I never received a letter. Just the phone call. Though I know most of us were waiting "patiently" for the expected letter that's been mentioned here on the forums.

Does Atlas only hire military? That's the feeling I've been getting over the last couple years of applying. I've had a resume walked in a few times too.

Maybe that is the problem. If someone tries to walk in a resume to hand into HR, they will politely ask the candidate to go through the same process as everyone else.

Your question is a fair one though, as it seems that Atlas has been hiring a lot more military cargo pilots recently. These specific pilots are an easy fit because this is similar to the type of flying that they already do. Furthermore, Atlas does not have to worry about one of these pilots quitting because of the 17-day stretch of being gone as they should be used to far longer stints.

However, as it has been said on this forum before, Atlas hires pilots from many different backgrounds. I have a civilian only background as did the majority of my initial new-hire class and the new-hire classes around mine.

Have you gone to a job fair and spoken with HR face to face?

Good question. I've never had anything walked in, but 7k+, 2k+ TPIC, 2k+ ACMI Int'l in MD-11/B747-4 and no call since applying in Aug. :(

HR is baffling in the aviation industry now as compared to 2000.

chip1 02-08-2013 10:58 AM

My class (last year) and the ones after were around 50% military, even a bit less.

HeavyHauler 02-08-2013 11:15 AM

gannonr3, my current class is about 1/3 military, 1/4 ACMI heavy, and the balance regional and corporate.

WTFover 02-08-2013 12:00 PM

Congrats to all those starting on the 18th! See ya around the Marriot campus.

Kevin stopped in and told our class just today there will be a -400 class every three weeks for the foreseeable future; hopefully more for the 767 as well.

gannonr3 02-08-2013 12:11 PM

Thanks for the replys. I only asked because the person walking in my resume has almost a 100 percent success rate walking in resumes of fellow military guys but not me.

Palmtree, it can take a while. A friend of mine at another ACMI began applying 1.5 years ago, just recently got the call.

DocN788RV 02-08-2013 12:36 PM

Any indication as to what size the classes will be?

744driver 02-08-2013 01:09 PM

Generally, the classes are 12 per class in each type of aircraft.

Last class that started (I believe) had 12 744 and 20 767...but about half of the 767 new-hires were from the 1224 fast-track and are (likely) on a short course for the 767.

Good luck.

Vertigo1960 02-08-2013 01:13 PM

Congrats

For the chaps I've been talking with, it was never a doubt. I knew you would get hired, I am only sorry there was no betting line in Vegas, it was an easy bet. You guys worked your butts off to make it to Atlas.

From the sidelines, this made my day. Very happy to see some great folks hired.

For those of us on the sidelines, let's keep the Faith. Let no one get you down. The HR Code will be broken---- perhaps we can kidnap a few HR types and try out some of those extraordinary tactics.

A toast was made tonight in your honor ( actually several toasts since I got a nice deal on Euros).

Nope, not only military folks. They hired me w/out any military flight time. That said, it was a very long, slow process. Patience is KEY!

Best of luck to those trying!

I'm in Miami now. You can hardly swing a dead cat by the tail without hitting an Atlas new hire. Congratulations to each and every one of you!

That is true. Just under 4 weeks from the start of indoc to finishing up with Cat II/III. Aggressive schedule, but I like it!

Make that 22 for the 767 and, yes, short courses for all who qualify; 3 fixed, 3 sims and a PC.

2/25 for me. I think others are right around the same, plus or minus a day.

Nice. More senority for the rest of us, however, its a double edge sword......More third seat PB time (paper *****) while you guys do OE. No worries. :) At least it will be a while before you are forced to fly with 744Driver! :p

744driver 02-09-2013 02:26 PM

Hey,

I don't need this abuse from my so-called friends...I can get the abuse at home any time I'm home (or actually, I don't need to be home to get badly treated!).

Damn, I really need to rethink my life.:(

DarinFred 02-09-2013 03:33 PM

The Call!

I just sent in an updated PAQ and resume. I'm a 2700 hour A-10 guy getting off Active Duty in a month. I went to the job fair in Chicago a few months back and plan on attending WIA in March. Is there anything I can do to set myself apart to get a call? Unfortunately, I know zero people on the seniority list at Atlas. But I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed!

No, no...this is the life you have chosen...

Seriously...just remember that when you're standing one the edge of the abyss, looking into the dark hole of nothingness, with the wind at your back...I'll be there for you brother.

With my hand pushing on your back!:D

But you are senior to me so it doesn't do you any good pushing me over the cliff:eek:

It sounds like you've filled all the right squares with H/R. Their hands are firmly on the hiring reins now as opposed to the old days when the Chief Pilot could just say, "hire this guy"! I know the waiting is difficult (been through it) but hang in there. As you have read in the previous several pages things are getting busy and the forecast is for a class every three weeks for quite some time.

We do have guys that dont have an internal rec and have gotten hired. Its takes a while for your resume to get to the top of the pile. 4 to 6 months.

Chappy Sinclair 02-10-2013 12:53 PM

Got the call last week for the whale. Applied August 2012, phone interview late Dec, interviewed Jan. 3000+ heavy mil, 1500+ PIC, no 121, 2 internal recs. Best of luck to everyone, seems like plenty more hiring to be done!

Haha, hey, it's about time I get some landings. You know damn well how much PB time there was at the last gig. :D

VnavPath 02-11-2013 09:47 PM

How are things shaping up over there for hiring this year? I know there have been some interviews recently but any news on this years numbers?

captainv 02-12-2013 03:37 AM

I haven't heard hard numbers, but there was this:

We were supposed to hire 50 for the two new 767s. Most of those are in class already - maybe one more class?

VnavPath 02-12-2013 04:05 AM

Thanks CaptainV, much appreciated!

Tanker-driver 02-12-2013 04:40 AM

We were told at the interview up to 200 for the year.

easyflying 02-12-2013 08:25 AM

they are looking at a upgrading 20 capt. for the 767 and 12 more for the 747. Bid comes out on the 15th of Feb.
The 767 upgrades for the LAX base postponed by 30 days. The bid on the 15th will have a few 767 upgrades though.
please feel free to look into the number I posted and feel free to correct them. I may be wrong.

I talked with a friend from the January interviews. He and another guy start on 11 March - 747.

rv8builder 02-12-2013 10:17 AM

ARG!

I got a message for an initial screening while I was overseas- called back, left a couple messages- no call back yet.

Any advice other than be patient?

Thx!

I'll be there as well! Heres the basic stats and timeline for those keeping score, I was about 24 months from first submission to class;

+9k total time
~6k turbine pic
600 744 SIC
2 internal LOR

-3/29/11- submitted PAQ/resume (updated every 30-60 days while the window was open)
-1/09/13- phone interview and invite for online test
-1/11/13- passed online test
-1/11/13- invite for 2/5 interview
-2/05/13- interview
-2/07/13- offered the 2/18 747 class (deferred to the 3/11 class since I'm on a trip)

When I was interviewing, I caught a glance of my resume that one of the interviewers had in front of them and it looked like the one I submitted when the window reopened in Aug last year. That would have been the first one that reflected my current job and 400 type rating. My interview group of 10 was an even mix between ACMI types (all flying Boeing 767/777/747) and military types. It was a very qualified, very sharp group. I honestly didn't feel that great about my chances with that competition.

As others have pointed out repeatedly, the information in this thread is invaluable. I read every page two years ago when I first started this process and have stayed up to date since. Many thanks to all the regular contributors, Indiana microbrews on me at the grill:D

f10a 02-12-2013 11:05 AM

I interviewed last week as well but have not heard anything :(

FLSTCI 02-12-2013 11:35 AM

I am waiting patiently on a call from Atlas and have been offered a March 4 class date at another carrier, a domestic LCC as it happens. Atlas is my first choice; the job I have been offered is not. The only thing I can see that is expected of me from the offered job is for me to resign my position with my previous (furloughed) carrier, which I would have no qualm doing. I have no feel for how competitive I am with Atlas as they seem to be picking people with varied backgrounds, but I came from an ACMI carrier and that is the career and lifestyle I prefer.
My concern is that I will receive a call sometime shortly after I commence training March 4. Realizing that I would be "burning a bridge" with the LCC, I am wondering how it would be seen by the folks hiring at Atlas if I am able to get invited to interview.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
