Online test completed with "Passed". No idea what final score was. Finished in 59 minutes. Don't plan on having extra time---despite a fair amount of time on the NATs and overseas, I was humping to get it done.

Gouge on here was pretty much spot on.

Saw some of the stuff (JFK ILS 31L, balanced takeoff stuff) pretty much verbatim.

Make sure you have access to a pdf version of the ATP test bank. A lot of questions particularly weather ones were pulled from that database verbatim so all you need to do is a key word search. Google searches can help as well.

Big picture as others have said was to know WHERE stuff is, not memorize it

Resources: Everything Explained, AC 00-45G pdf---esp symbols, ATP test bank pdf, ATP dispatch test bank, FAR/AIM (didn't use---questions covered by this were pretty basic). Get a TAF/METAR guide and have that handy as well.

Know what a trigger NOTAM is.

All in all, a good test to figure out where you are short. Definitely have some areas to improve on but I'm still in the fight and looking forward to the next step if I'm lucky enough to get a call.

JerrySpringer 12-27-2011 12:57 PM

I heard the displacement bid for the last of the Ropestart pilots was done last year.

If not, so the fun begins!

Best of luck to those of you treading water, and those awaiting interviews.

Just got done with a trip to the school house. Rumor from several checkpilots is that they're swamped down there, and the -200 transition will suck up the spring slots.

On the upshot (except for those of us online) is that we're still short. They're also making checkairman like crazy.

744driver 12-27-2011 10:28 PM

Congratulations, hvydvr...next stop, Miami and the interview sometime next year.

I found the AC 00-45G pdf at AC 00-45G CHG 1 Aviation Weather Services after a brief Google search.

hvydvr 12-28-2011 04:31 PM

Doomed got the 00-45

Index of /faa_exam/atp

There's the ATP test bank. That'll get you rolling. Can't overemphasize to know how your stuff is organized and where to find your answers.

From talking to some others, most of the folks know about 50 or so. The next 30 they look up. 10 are educated guesses. The final 10 are kind of wild ass guesses----here's to you crazy jet stream questions.

Enjoy.

For real.....there is ZERO extra time. My head was spinning when I was finished.

chip1 12-29-2011 09:41 AM

So let me get this straight. There are a ton of guys in the pool, and they stopped classes because of a major backlog in training, pushed January interviews back indefinitely, but are allowing guys to take the online assessment? I don't get this. Why are they still calling people?

mtharston 12-29-2011 11:50 AM

interviews back on.........

Had a January interview that was push back till spring/summer but I just got a call today
for a early Feb interview?

hvydvr 12-29-2011 12:37 PM

Confirmed. Just heard from HR. Interview in early Feb. No idea if they're doing multiple days or what but there is definitely movement.

chip1 12-29-2011 01:24 PM

ok, good news. hope they start running classes soon

Are they telling you guys which airplane you will be interviewing for?

I'm a corporate guy with pretty low jet PIC time 800 on EMB-145 and CJ's. FO time is only 1100 on a Dash 8. I was wondering if i even stand a chance? I applied in October 2010. My total time is high but flying charter now days in a 421 and contract flying the CJ. What do you think? Thanks in advance. Anyone hired with similar?

hvydvr 01-02-2012 01:35 PM

No indication of what airplane. Pretty sure successful folks will enter the pool with all the other swimmers and will come out as the company looks to fill classes.:)

Hovernut 01-02-2012 03:52 PM

No...haven't heard anything from the company since passing the test. I figured it was due to the classic training thing, but it seems like calls may be going out again. I hope the new year brings good news!!

Anyone hearof any new hire classes? Still swimming!!

ImperialxRat 01-04-2012 09:18 AM

I saw on Jan 2nd they posted a Climbto350 add... good news as it sounds like hiring will continue.

EMB CJ3 flyer 01-04-2012 09:27 AM

I wouldn't discourage anyone from applying. It seems there is a pretty wide range of experience, and total times that make it through the process. What are they looking for exactly? No one can really say! Send your stuff in, and keep updating it. The phone won't ring, if you don't give them your number! Take each part of the process seriously, and make sure you've done your homework with the online test before you decide to take it.

Good luck and keep after it!

Whale Driver 01-04-2012 02:27 PM

Yes, I think you are in the game. All the classes in the last couple years have been a complete cross section of experience. With that said, the biggest thing you can do to help yourself fast is get a LOR from a current Atlas pilot, and a bigger plus is one that has flown with you. (and willing to say so :) )

But the parking of the -200s has begun. Unfortunately, the first group of PFE's were just furloughed and the training center will be plugged with the -200 pilots in -400 school.

Good luck.

Treading water in the pool with you... have not heard anything definitive... talked with DB briefly before holidays, gave indication that phone calls will be made in mid Jan to "all" those that are currently in the pool as to what to expect in the coming months... hopefully some firm class dates for a lucky few or even some tentative ones for the bottom dwellers (since we're all racked and stacked)... I had heard that further interviews had been pushed back to June time frame but now are back on for February so am taking that as a positive sign... hope we both get the call soon!!

Cliff, this is John H from USA Jets (currently with Avenge Inc.). Your old email doesn't work anymore and I don't have your phone number. Is it possible for you to contact me?

akaviator 01-05-2012 07:36 PM

Just read all 283 pages...wow. I'd have to say the Atlas folks on here are 1st class for all they've shared to help the next wave(s) of pilots out. Incredible amounts of information with nary a negative about the job. Bravo!

Hope to have my resume in by next week.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm studying all the details that left my head in anticipation of a phone call and opportunity to take the online test, and of course practicing my backstroke!

Thanks for the encouragement. In the day at Mesa we had a lot of captains go to Atlas (Polar) and unfortunately I never kept in touch with them. I'm scrambling to get a friend of an Atlas pilot to at least let me beg a letter from. Thanks again!

To the Atlas pilots, I don't believe I saw this asked anywhere...is it normal to stay together as a crew for an entire trip?

It is normal to NOT stay together. Some bases tend to the more traditional with crews staying together, but by a VERY far margin, the norm is constant change, daily. errrrrrrrrrrr I mean more like every few hours.

744driver 01-06-2012 03:03 PM

What whaledriver really means is that there is nothing that is NORMAL at Atlas, isn't that right?!!:D

In fact, I have even been told in the past that we are not really an airline, just a B2B outsourcing outfit that just happens to move airplanes to bring in revenue.

I fly with the same Captain every couple of years, the longest I've stayed together as a crew, is about a week.

744driver 01-06-2012 09:02 PM

Commonly known as doing the Atlas Starburst...especially when you are on a heavy crew and the third or the forth guy is not needed for the next leg of the trip.

Example...

My last trip on the 744 as an FO before I went to the 767 CA training last fall...

CVG to BAH...1 CA, 3 FOs
DH BAH to DXB...all four of us DH to DXB.
Next day, DXB to HKG...1 CA, 2 FOs. 3rd FO DH with us on company airplane.
Next HKG to CVG...1 CA, 3 FOs.

Above is one example of the crew staying together...but most often, even if the trip is assigned/awarded that way, you are likely going to end up in a hub like DXB, PVG, HKG, FRA, etc, and all 3 or 4 guys will end up on other crews doing other things.

Some "negatives":
It is possible to get a 17 days in a row schedule, with 3 days involuntarily added on...not likely, but possible. My last two rotations were about 1 week each.

Change (often dramatic, as in, no more SYD-HKG-ANC, instead airline to DXB, then Dakar-VCP (Brasil)-MIA) is constant and frequent. For guys that want a schedule set in stone, this is a negative (some guys think it's a positive, as it adds to the "interesting" factor).

The -400 training program could be a lot better (but it is improving).

Some guys think the pay is bad-terrible (I am not one of them).

Some guys complain that the company/mgmt does not care about them (as I'm sure you're aware, a situation in today's global economy that is unique to Atlas)

Some guys are burned out and want to retire (not very many).

Because of the nature of our business, things go according to plan less than at DAL/UAL/AA. So, more is required of the Atlas employees out on line. (For some this is a positive, as the job is more interesting and they get to do more stuff on their own).

Crossing a lot of time zones quickly can be challenging.

That is some of the stuff I could think of that would make certain people think twice about Atlas. It IS a good idea to think about what you like/don't like, and how a new job will fit with your capabilities. When you work in a job that you fit into better, it makes everything easier for everyone involved.

For me, it is good. I am glad I am here, and not leaving unless something bad happens, like a furlough or Chapter 7.

Good luck to you in your job search!

God Bless, and Namaste...

Nice to get a summary from a guy (like Cliff in the post above) that has been here for just about a year or so...

akaviator 01-08-2012 06:03 AM

Quote - "When you work in a job that you fit into better, it makes everything easier for everyone involved." Isn't that the truth?

Thanks for the "negatives". I currently fly 15 to 16 day schedules every month with a day of commute on each end so the 17 day trip is not out of line for what I'm used to, and works well for for me. I do live just outside of Anchorage and being based here on the -400 looks mighty nice, although it sounds like base may not have much to do with where you start your trip.

Paul

ultradrvr 01-09-2012 04:49 AM

I also have found a home. If Atlas holds up there end of the deal I will stay. One thing to consider though......The 767 is spooling up its operation. If you are hired on the twin it may be a few months before you get paid. (up to 4 months before full pay) The first class of F/Os have been sitting since early NOV on training pay. I asked HR when they called for a class date how long between school and the start of OE, her response was "we have aircraft operating now so it shouldnt be a problem". As the operation progresses Im sure the delay times will be shortened but plan accordingly just in case. All of us in the first class are established pilots with lives and bills and it has been rough. It would not have changed my plans to come to Atlas but I would have made different financial decesions. So I guess a negative that will turn positive soon I hope

BOGSAT 01-09-2012 05:34 AM

Heard a rumor of just a few more classes this year... Purely 76 plus up, 74 classes, or do you think that this is all speculation? Thanks

Just a guess from a poolee, but I'd say if they were only planning a few more classes this year then they wouldn't have rescheduled interviews for Feb.

Again, just a guess on my part.

Boola Boola 01-09-2012 03:13 PM

Has anyone else been notified of any more interviews? So far I count 2 guys. It doesn't sound like the hiring flood gates have exactly opened up again. I was scheduled for a Jan interview and from everything I hear I'm not expecting another phone call until June at the earliest. Call me pessimistic, but I'm going to continue thinking the hiring has come to a halt until I hear otherwise. Too bad, I was really looking forward to it, gotta put my enthusiasm on ice now.
