Just curious about the bid process, specifically on the 777 side. Curious if you lived near LAX if it would be possible to bid for that flying over CVG. Do you submit days off requests or bid for lines with the days off you want?

Lines are posted, you bid what you want and hope you get it. There are a few more Cvg lines versus Lax.

Scheduling may or may not use the days at the beginning of your line. If unused, those are extra days at home. I only worked 198 days last year. But I am fairly senior and use all of my vacation and pick up some open time. Usually, you will be gone less than 20. However, there are months you could be gone more.

Living at one of the stations will allow you to sneak home in the middle of your trip or avoid travel to/from but you'll also lose the 50% pay credit for the deadhead.

Hopefully a recent 777 hire will chime in and give you their experience so far.

I have flown a DHL type of operation before, and it was more like a Monday-Friday deal. Are the 737 trips like that? Where do the 737 guys finish for the weekend? The company has to give you a 1 in 7 somewhere. I was thinking if it turns to be more like a two days deal and you can drive or jumpseat home. Thanks

You are correct. You typically will spend the weekend in CVG on your own dime or at home. They will just put RSV on you. There are the occasional 3 night layover on the weekends out west in Reno or Sacramento. You do get your 1/7 so if you live in CVG it's a bonus day off.

Thanks. I did some weekends in Stockton, CA, and were not bad. Wine testing in the valley, or drive to San Francisco with the rental car.

I heard upgrading on the 737 could be fast, if you have the times.

Yeah it's slowing down a bit as the latest 73s have been delayed coming on property. I'm sure the attrition will now come to a halt as well with the Atlas news. I would bet around a year currently.

The delay is due to negotiations between DHL and the current operator of those 2 airframes. It has nothing to do with SAI.

However, you are correct in that most airframes/projects always seem to be delayed around here.

I think the continued hiring at Southern Air indicates that Atlas has expansion plans for the 777 AND the 737.

Fedex looking for about 500 during the next 18 months too. Probably happy to snap up 777 pilots.
