Default Discussion on airworthiness. (Alaska style)

Mitchieville Blog Archive Bear Destroys Plane - Duct Tape To The Rescue

I'm trying to understand if anything this pilot did was actually legal in some way or not?

I believe that everything that pilot did was safe and within his judgment to be flyable.

I wanted to argue that the repairs fall under Part 43 in Preventive maintenance where a private pilot is allowed to make "simple fabric patches, where it doesnt require the removal of control surfaces or structures..."

It also seems that what he did would fall under a 'major airframe repair'. Which a private pilot obviously is not allowed to do.

What do you think?

The person I am discussing this with believes that the pilot should have had his certificate revoked permanently....

How else were they supposed to get it out? Sometimes in these types of cases people get ferry permits. Its done quite often in Alaska.
