WASHINGTON — House Republicans today abandoned a controversial amendment that would have undermined aviation safety legislation passed into law by the Families of Continental Flight 3407.
The amendment's author, Rep. Bill Shuster, R-Pa., asked that the measure — which would have made it far tougher to draw up new aviation safety rules — be withdrawn.

This is very significant to aviation safety (new flight time duty time regs). Shows the importance of our union at a national level, with the ability to lobby against management agendas in DC. Stuff like this makes me smile at the people who say "ALPA National only wants our money" or "ALPA National doesn't do anything".
Help still needed with lithium battery standards.
FAA Reauthorization Update – Shuster Amendment Withdrawn
May 20, 2011
Thanks to the efforts of thousands of ALPA members responding to the Association’s Call to Action and “Grass Roots Campaign,” Rep. Bill Shuster (R-PA) has withdrawn his legislative amendment regarding FAA regulatory process that would have interfered with needed updates to flight-time/duty-time regulations.
In recent weeks, Rep. Shuster has come under enormous pressure to stand down on this issue, and the voice of ALPA pilots made a tremendous difference.
In his statement, Shuster referenced ALPA’s “One level of Safety” motto and urged Congress to swiftly approve necessary FAA reauthorization legislation. However, other ALPA priorities remain within the FAA Reauthorization Bill, namely lithium batteries and UAS. Several provisions contained in the House version of the bill could:
• Prevent basic safety standards for the air transportation of lithium batteries, and
• Allow Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) to enter the National Airspace System before critical safety and operational standards are developed.
We still need your support in opposing this language. Click here to participate now! Use this link to contact your federal legislators directly and read more information on why the House provisions on lithium batteries and UAS must not be included in the final bill.

Just got out of guard drill...and naturally went to APC (I'm such a nerd.) I had to read this thread! Nice work ALPA (et. al)!! Finally safety first is becoming less and less lip service.
