I noticed piedmont and lakes have already updated their interview mins to as low as 800 and 1000hrs respectively. I'm curious to see if they interview and put sub 1500hr guys in a pool until they meet the available legal mins.

Do you mind telling us which school you went attended or are attending? I tried to call up my old chief pilot from my university the other day to check on their status, and still haven't been able to get in contact with them yet. I'm assuming from your name Ohio U?

Yeah I went to Ohio U. I graduated last year. I emailed the faa contact listed on the final ruling and got some further info. She said that they are reviewing the applications as they receive them and I know one school has been approved. If I were you PiperDriver I would try to point your school in the right direction. The instructions are in AC 61-139 and the application is faa form 8700-1. I got my school moving on it early in hopes that they would be one of the first approved. Hopefully they are soon

I think this could bring more people into the aviation industry. They wouldn't have to have the fear of having 250tt and needing 1000 more hours before looking marketable to anyone. Flight schools could benefit from a flow through sort of like the airlines do.
While I also agree that it is great experience, I don't like the fact that ameriflight barely trains these SICs and then expects a line captain to do free on the job training. The only reason AMF wants this exemption is to keep the money rolling in.

The FAA is seeking comments on this subject

Well, sort of, if you have commercial or instrument students. Private students will only get you about 5-10 hours per student which may take quite a bit of time.

I have 1400 hours TT and about 450 XC even after working for a survey company for 18 months and taking into the account the "flyover" rule for XC ATP minimums.

Thanks for that info OU. I contacted my school about a week ago, and they said they were submitting the app that week. Will you let me know when your school gets approved. I was told anywhere from 30-120 days. This was what the FAA told my school. I am hoping they get approved soon. I've noticed a few airlines that are interviewing and taking applicants with this exception. Not sure how they would handle a pending exception or pending school approval. Maybe I should just contact the airlines and talk to them about it.

Depends on what kind of students you have, and where you work, but in 575 dual given, I racked up a whopping 75 hours XC for what it's worth. That's with landings at least 50NM away.

The XC time is going to be a limiting factor for a lot of instructors moving up. Even with an AABI degree, at 1000 hours most instructors wont meet the XC requirements. UND did a survey on their instructor group to determine on average how many hours of XC they get, and out of the 100 or so instructors on staff, most would be instructing until ~1300 to meet the XC requirement.
