Default Instrument Time

I just got back from my instrument proficiency check and me and my CFII were discussing logging simulator time in the simulator column and the portion that was simulated instrument time in the simulated instrument column.

I have always been lead to believe that this may be done this way. I have several CFI signatures in my books that were also logged in my simulated instrument column. Never had a problem. The simulator was, of course, simulating instrument conditions.

It seems to me that people get confused on this issue due to a few factors. One is that there are limits to how much simulator time may count towards a rating, but no limits to how much you can log.

Any thoughts?
