Default Moving up the pay scale

I'm a pilot not in the airline industry yet but considering it for the future. I have some questions about how you move up the payscale. Let's say you get hired with a regional airline as an FO and get promoted to CA after 4 years. Do you start at the 4 year pay for CA or do you start at the bottom of year one CA pay?

Then let's say you get hired with the legacy airline associated with that regional, do you start at the bottom again and lose all your seniority in regards to scheduling and payscale?

1. 4 year captain scale
2. Yes, start over from the bottom, 1st year pay and bottom of the seniority list.

And most importantly, if you ever leave, fired, furlough etc.....you’re back to year 1 lowest pay at the new airline.

In the US only, you keep your longevity when moving from FO to CA. Overseas that's often not the case.

Changing airlines, including flow from from a regional owned by the major, you start all over at the bottom of the new employer's seniority list. There is no seniority portability.

Seniority = your position relative to other pilots, first hired is most senior.

Longevity = years of service with the company, applies to pay, vacation, 401k match in many cases, nonrev priority, etc.

Info given = Superb!!!

Easiest way to explain to a passenger next you:

For the most part, we will ALWAYS start at the bottom if we change corporations.
We do not command a set or ballpark price based on our experience or talent like a Doctor or Lawyer.

End of discussion... Passenger jaw drop along with the mic!

The part missing in the above statement is most businesses promote on merit. The guy willing to put in the 80 hour weeks is the one moving up the ladder. Imagine if airline seat positions, bases and equipment awards were merit based? The pilot who burns the least fuel, never cancels, least logbook writeups, no sick calls and always extends to the max allowed is the guy moving on up!

And the airline industry would be that much more unsafe.

Oh we all know a merit based system would actually be based on merit but politics.

Paging corporate aviation......

Been there (as a contractor), no thanks. Too much ass kissing, not enough flying.
