Unhappy

With the pandemic going on, I want to say that the future doesn't look too promising. The current drop in demand in commercial aviation looks as if there won't be a pilot shortage for a while. Given the situation, as a 42 yr old CFI who was about to make the move to regionals this year, I am not so sure if I will ever get to see a decent stint at a major airline now. Will we ever return to the normal levels of hiring of 2019?

You still have over 20 years until you would be forced to retire. That’s a pretty long time. This next year to maybe two years is going to suck but the industry will pick back up and lots of pilots are still going to retire. No one has a crystal ball (obviously look at this situation), but I still think pilots have a good outlook career wise over the next 10 years.

If you’re able to, try and position yourself so you’re able to be hired on the front end of the next hiring wave.

Is aviation a second career for you? What were you doing before?

Sort of. Former Army tech and a helo pilot. Also didn't start my life in the US until I was 22. I didn't want a career in helos, neither fixing nor flying them however, military service, college education, family etc here I am at 42 years young.

Sort of. Former Army AH-64 Armament and later Aviator. Didn't want to continue a career in helicopters, neither fixing nor flying them, so finished college and became an instructor. Started my life in the US at the age of 22 so in the 20 years, military service, college education, 2 marriages, here I am

Thanks for the encouragement. Going cargo possibly would be a better deal now, don't you think? Even though I imagined myself aiming for Delta oneday, it is one step at a time.

I absolutely agree. No one knows what's going to happen and you still have plenty of time to make a good run at a career. I stay optimistic and think everything works out as long as you maintain a good attitude and keep pushing forward.

Days go by easy doing this. I am pretty busy with 7 students at the moment so it keeps my mind off of things.

Positivity goes a long way. I had the best commander in my early years in the military. He had one saying, "Its all attitude!"

Better question when will any regional start hiring? My bet is 2022. Friends in corporate flying say resumes are already pouring in, no contract work, no hiring at airlines, pilots are looking anywhere they can.
