Default MEI or not?

How important will multi time be when the airlines start hiring again? I currently have the CFI/I and will be over ATP mins by the time they do start hiring, but still shy of 100 multi. I have been kicking around the idea of getting the MEI, but I don't know if the investment would be used all that much with the current program I'm teaching in.

IF the multi time is important, how much is considered enough..100, 200, 500, or even 1000?

If the recovery is anything like past recessions then multi time will be big. Turbine part 121 will be even better.

Late 90's till early 2000's 1200 and 200 was a norm to get hired at a regional. If you feel that you would be marketable with 1200 tt and less than 100 multi, then don't go after the mei. If it would in your opinion make you stand out from the crowd, then become an mei. It is all up to you.
FYI, there are over 6000 part 121 pilots on furlough, what do they have that you don't? Always ask this question.

Back up even a few more years to the mid 90's and if you didn't have 1500tt and an ATP they wouldn't even look at you.

GrUp made a good point - what do the others have that you don't?
Also ask yourself - If ME time wasn't important then why would it be a minimum?

Shoot for the minimum the airline requires and consider the rest a bonus for competitiveness. Just remember who you are competing with.

Default Competitive hiring minimums

Keep an eye on competitive hiring minimums. An airline might have a certain set of minimums just to be able to fill out an application however they might be actually hiring people at another much higher set of minimums.

Kit Darby and his Air Inc corporation use to publish information on the experience level of new hire classes at most every airline. It was very telling of what a pilot had to actually have in order to be considered.

Post 9/11, 300-350 ME seemed to be the magic number...that's where people started getting called at the beginning of the hiring boom.

I would strongly recommend the MEI, or some other means of building twin time. If you miss out on the early hiring, you will be in the furlough zone for the next downturn.

Also, there is a bill in congress which requires airlines to emphasize multi-engine experience when hiring. It does not set specific minimums, but if it passes it may prompt airlines to set higher official or competitive mins.

Where do you live? Can you relocate? I would seriously look at skipping the MEI and getting on with Ameriflight. Pretty good pay for the job and you will rack up multi time. The regionals seem to have an affinity for freight pilots also - more real world experience!

Thanks for the responses everyone..you've all been helpful...one more question though..

Would getting the ATP with less than 100 multi be better than someone with a few hundred multi and no ATP? I understand that a lot of furloughed regional guys have the ATP, but I'm not planning on getting in before them.

The ME time should be your first priority. If you really need an ATP and meet the mins, you can knock it out in a few days. The ATP may be required for the airlines in a few years, but until then ME time is more valuable and harder to get.

Rickair said it in a nutshell - go for the ME time. However you get it (instructing, 135, whatever) is up to you. But that should be your focus.
