However, due to the severity of the failure, the FAA and NTSB have launched an investigation and the NTSB plans to do an incident report.

I have heard somewhere on here, that airlines like AE, automatically disqualify your airlineapps app if you check that you have been involved in an aircraft accident, incident, or investigation. I want to be honest, but I don't want my app overlooked for something that I couldn't avoid. I feel that that specific question is directed towards pilots that were negligent in some way. If anything, my experience and training saved my butt and I would think a situation like this would actually HELP me get hired somewhere.

Can anyone shed some light on this or offer advice?
You will be fine. If Eagle doesn't want you because you saved the day in a busted airplane, screw 'em. Everyone else will shake your hand. Nice job and good luck.

I am in the same situation. Complete mechanical (prop broke in half in-flight) failure with NTSB report. I made it back to a runway but, I always feel like checking the incident box is working against me.

What's the reasoning behind leaving out anyone with an incident/accident record? Is it for insurance purposes? Or just lazy people not wanting to weed out the "good" accident/incident applicants from the "bad" ones?
Several reasons:

- Lazy. It requires effort to get to the bottom of an incident.
- Cost. It may cost money to investigate an incident.
- Risk. No matter how thoroughly they investigate it, there is still a remote possibility that it WAS your fault, and that CNN will uncover the real story later (after you are involved in a colgan-style accident).

Honesty will get you nowhere with AMR, just ask TM

One thing I have been doing lately is including the NTSB Case number that way whoever is reviewing the app doesn't have to look it up.

If the airlines did not employ guys with incidents, there would be a pilot shortage. I know guys flying with incidents for Mesa, Republic, Skywest, and Compass -- I am sure others hire as well, but I know guys at these places.

You will learn a lot the next few days, months, all of it will make you a better pilot. Keep your head high and be proud of all of our accomplishments -- including not allowing this incident to be an worse than it was. You will prevail! DO NOT let this end your flying career.

I'm still confused how a mechanical failure would have any negative effect on his pilot career.

OP, you have nothing to be afraid of. Be proud of your story. It was not your fault, and have nothing to explain except how well you handled it.
