The self employed aspect was fairly easy, I became a General Manager and worked for an LLC I gave to my wife.

The recency aspect took calling in a favor by getting some time with a CFI buddy in his Cessna, and renewing my CFI. Okay, I'm current and trainable, more or less. Three weeks later I had three offers in hand.

What I did have in hand was all of my training records from my previous (defunct) 121 employer, all FAA airman and medical records, and a recent NDR report, also clean. Each employer will have you notarize the NDR request as they get their own, however it was one less thing for the hr folks to wonder about initially. One Check Airman I met with in an interview saw through the self employment, however thought it was pretty cool after explaining what I had been, and still am doing.

As above you can get your own paperwork prior to see exactly what to lay on the table. Best of luck, I'm having a ball!
Are you flying 121, 135 or 91? As I told Fjetter, the more I think about this, the more I'm leaning 135 as a re-entry point. Not sure I want to be stuck on the bottom of another senority list and go through all of that again.

I was out of the business for 13 years. Aug 1994 to Oct 2007, at which point I went to work for a 121 Regional, then a 135/91K outfit, then furloughed, then flew as a contract pilot... and recently hired into the "pool" at an ACMI (Supplemental 121)outfit to fly 747's... so time out of the cockpit while a hurdle, can be overcome. The other isssue is your training failure. I agree with Rick that it should be a PRIA event and will most likely show on your pria records. Either way I would disclose and let the chips fall will they may I reaally think most companies would understand, some maynot you can not worry about those.

I would love to fly the 747 - that is just awesome.

When I took my recurrent PC, I had flown 2 days in 90; I knew going in that there was a risk of failing the event - I was super rusty and as you know, regionals are not going to give you sim time to get proficient. I own the mistakes that I made (nothing major like busting limitations or getting lost, just some minor stuff [which kept adding up, lol] that bothered the CKA and the Fed that was observing), but I really like what you said about not worrying about the companies that won't hire me, that's very sage advice.

Thanks Herc

I fly for 9K, it's a 135/121 operator. The other two offers were both 121 regionals. The training failure is easily explained, you had been out of it for such an extended period, you lost your proficiency.

You're going to the bottom pretty much anywhere, however there is so much movement today you'll be flipping forward several pages in order to find your seniority number in a couple of months.
