Default People crash planes too.

Computers can not do what Sully did but neither can most pilots. Computers do not get bored, fall asleep or stray from procedure. The idea of a computer suffering a glitch and flying a plane into the side of a mountain is horrifying however we are use to people doing that. Somehow it seems more palatable. I think in the long run the data will prove that hands on the yoke cause more accidents.

Sky,
Why don't you just "cut" to the chase and say you hate anybody who has made a successful career in Aviation? Seriously, all the constant whining, whimpering, take a shot comments are getting stale and old. You sound like an intelligent guy on one hand and a spoiled, my way cry baby on the other. Utilize your intelligence on something more constructive from time to time. Think out of the "box" once in a while Sky, you might like what you find.

All I am saying is that romance and the ideal that human control is exclusively superior to automation is not all that accurate. Sully made a great save and that is wonderful. Most of the time however it is a bonehead move by human hands that drives a perfectly good plane into the ground.

The statistics prove that the more invasive automation and computers are to aviation the safer we are.

Just look at the accident record over the last 15 years. 50 years ago DC-3 pilots had to share the same attitude indicator and waited for a break in the weather to take a reading from the stars for navigation.

Now we sit there half awake glancing occasionally at the symbol of an airplane as it creeps across the glass map. Avionics and automation are making it much safer and easier to fly everyday.
