Default 737/320 self type rating advantage?

im a flight instructor and am just about to get my ATP multi engine, hopefully next month i'll have it.
Iv heard from numerous sources that after my ATP if i go for a 737/320 type on my own money i can give my career a jump start and that way skip the regionals... And that i can get a type rating for b737/a320 for as low as around 10,000.
Im really interested in doing this but it is my hard earned savings and i dont want to gamble with it. Please advise

You'll get two schools of thought on that. 1) SWA guys, and 2) everybody else. I got the 737 type, and I don't necessarily regret it, but it hasn't helped me get a job either. Personally, I'd save the money and focus on building the time that the majors value. Everything else being equal, quality hours (jet, TPIC, etc.) are probably more valuable than a 737/320 type. I'm certainly no expert, but that's the impression I'm getting at this point. Others can chime in if they disagree.

You can't skip the regionals because you have a type rating. You can skip the regionals if you have thousands of hours of turbine PIC time. Now, if you got the cash, it might be a nice thing to do, in fact, you might be able to combine your ATP ride with the type ride, saving money. There are probably lots of applications you fill out in the future that ask you what kind of type ratings you have, but I'd only suggest this if you have the money laying around and are not struggling.

My understanding is that if you want to fly for SWA, your application goes to the "other pile" if you don't have a 737 type. You can get hired, and their policy is that you have six months to get it, but that's only if they hire everyone with their type already. I've also heard that it can be a negative to the other airlines to have a 737 type. They'll know that your first choice was SWA and you might leave as soon as they call. I'm still an outsider looking in, but that what my research shows.

That's ridiculous. Those types will not help you unless have 1000 hours IN the type (maybe 500 overseas).

If a narrow-body type would let you skip ten years at a regional, then everybody would have one.

Once you get 1000 TPIC, then a 73 type is certainly helpful with SWA.

Simple answer: Don't. Spend the $10K on hookers, use what ever is left over... ah who am I kidding, there shouldn't be any left over after that.

Why would you spend money on the ATP and then go for a type rating a few weeks later? If you are going to get a type rating take the ATP and type checkride together! Also, if you plan on flying for a regional airline just take the written and let them pay for the ATP and a Type rating of some sort. Do the regional airlines still do that or are they now requiring an ATP to get initially hired or just the flight minimums and an ATP written?

I got a A320 TR for almost nothing (got hooked up) and Im in the regionals... Trust me when I tell you that the A320 or 737 type will NOT let you skip the regionals... It will not even give you an advantage when you are at the regionals and looking to leave. I thought it would help me because I dont have any PIC time and it doesnt look like any is coming anytime soon so when I got the TR I thought it would help me move on.. The answer to that is NO!

I have 6000+tt 4500 jet and 3 types... I can't get a call back from anyone.. Spirit, Virgin, JB etc etc..

100% waste of money...

I agree with everyone else, in addition to it being pretty much useless (without time in type), you also run the risk of getting your resume to the circular file even faster with low TT and a 737/A320 type!

I tend to disagree. A recent type rating proves to the hiring manager/Chief Pilot that you're trainable, particularly when so many pilots fall into the career F/O category. Sure you passed all of your PC checks in the CRJ or ERJ, but what about a totally new airframe? An added bonus if you type in an airframe the company you are applying to operates. Put it this way, how many carriers don't operate the A-320 or B-737?
