Default Am I competitive?

I am currently a 135 charter pilot flying as a captain, type rated in the CE 500/550 series. I have 3900TT, 2900 Turbine, 2100 Turbine PIC, 1500 Jet, 650 Jet PIC.

I have a 4 year degree and a couple LOR's and looking to make the jump into the 121 world. I was wondering if my numbers were on par with others that were applying to the majors and others who were getting calls?

Thanks,

Ok, I guess my next question would be what are competitive minimums and is it worth taking a substantial pay cut to fly for a regional to get 121 time? Or is PIC Jet time more valuable? Just looking for an opinion, I know ultimately it is whatever suit my family best...

Just keep your apps up to date. You'll know you are competitive when you get the call. There are no definitive competitive numbers right now. As for taking a pay cut to go 121, it's simple economics, don't leave your job for a worse job, leave for a better job. As time goes on the experience required to get hired will go down and your experience level will go up. Look at the 5, 10, 15, 20 year outlook for staying or going to the regionals. I wouldn't assume you would get hired any quicker at a major if you go 121 now unless you get lucky and find yourself with a guaranteed flow.

I am going to ask the silly question of why is he not competitive? While I am fully aware that there are 10,000 hour pilots out there that have suffered at a regional for over a decade, there are no guarantees that they will get the nod before the OP. We have all seen someone that we thought was a sure bet to get hired not even get a phone call and someone that was a long shot get in. Also, as we are all well aware, there are so many factors that go into getting hired that it is almost impossible to know who is competitive or not. And let’s face it, if his two LOR’s are from the right people, he is almost guaranteed to get in even against the 10,000 regional captain.

He is not competitive because he does not have an interview. Like you said, there are so many factors. While considering all his factors, they have chosen not to interview him yet. You can not look at hours alone. The fact that the 4000tt guy with no turbine pic time gets hired with the right LOR proves it. Don't look at the exception and think your competitive because he got hired.

No argument that you have to get an interview to get hired. I guess from what I read in his original post he was thinking about applying but had not sent in apps yet. So I guess one could also argue that if you do not apply you are not competitive.

Unless you're well connected at some major, your not competitive yet. There are RJ check airmen with thousands of TPIC still waiting for a call.

I suspect you will be competitive within five years or so, so it would be a tough call to say go to a regional for 121 time at this point. Depends on how bad you want it and what your willing to do to maximize your odds.
