Probably should stay away from putting anything about guns and/or any other politically divisive topic on your resume, even if you are volunteering. You never know which way the HR person reading your resume leans. Best to stick with kids and animals. Hard to hate those.

You realize you could volunteer for the NRA, right? Or are you really just that dumb that you think "volunteer" equals "left wing extremism?"
Delta takes an active roll in many of the communities it serves. It has many charitable foundations. It wants its employees to share that. They choose to hire pilots that do more than show up and leave.
What's wrong with that?

Oh, sorry, I missed the part where Delta said, "YOU MUST VOLUNTEER WITH ORGANIZATIONS WE SUPPORT."

All the recruiters at NGPA said that since there's so many qualified pilots applying, they need SOMETHING to differentiate between them. College degree, GPA, chief pilot/check airmen positions, volunteer experience, etc. They know all the applicants can fly an airplane, but what what separates you from the 10,000 others who want the same position?
Don't think of it as trying to check another box (although maybe that's why you'll initially sign up for it) but rather a way to enrich your life by giving back to those less fortunate. You just might surprise yourself!

Agreed, but it's still more than the vacancies at each company, so HR needs something to discriminate with. Right now it's volunteering. 2 years from now, maybe it'll be a masters degree. Who knows?

Whether or not you volunteer your time tells companies quite a lot about you. Choosing not to tells them "I'm self-centered and I don't care about my community or causes larger than myself."
Like it or not, these companies don't exist to provide you a job. They are free to shape their workforces any way they like, and showing preference to those who volunteer their time is their way of saying "we prefer people who are not just here for a paycheck."
