I'm not surprised it's a discussion at all. United has made it very clear that they are targeting pilots with around 5500 hours. I've heard this directly from the VP of Flight Ops. Other airlines have made similar statements and statements alluding to "over xxx hours pilots aren't trainable". Are there exceptions to the rule? Sure! But they are exceptions.
So, that said, this totally sucks for some poor schmuck who has been at XYZ Regional flying the same aircraft type for 13 years and now has 13,000 hours and 11,000 TPIC, all of it flown for the major he is applying for... But now told you have too many hours. That's a cold, hard slap in the face. I know many people in this position.
I'm not suggesting AT ALL that it's okay to lie or mislead on the app, just that I recognize how unfair the system is and that this will lead to thinking about ways to game it.

That won't last forever. Eventually they'll run out of the guys they want and start taking the guys they can get. It may take a while but eventually the lost generation of regional pilots will make up Indoc classes. Sitting and waiting sucks but you can always go to a regional with a true flow so you have a backup plan.

How badly would it be viewed to not include flight experience in an application? I'm not speaking of removing negative information, just not including several years and several thousand hours of airline experience to bring myself more in line with what the legacy airlines would prefer. I would, of course, still include any checkride failures and/or negative issues.
The same goes for your logbook, college transcripts and the rest of paperwork you bring to the interview.
The recruiters will go over everything with a fine tooth comb before they sit down with you for the HR portion. Make it look perfect.
If anybody has a question about their application or paperwork please let us know.

I would strongly advise not doing this to your application. The airlines can see what you add/delete every time you update your app (The recruiters at the interview will only see the final app version). Make sure your application is a true representation of who you are and what you are all about. Honesty and integrity are so important.

Bill Kennedy (the manager of pilot hiring at United) has specifically said they have zero tolerance for people covering up past issues or artificially fluffing up a resume/app. They will throw you out on the street immediately upon discovering it, even if you're in class.

My apologies to whomever this offended. I was speaking to a hiring manager in another field of work, who suggested that it would be considered foolish to claim experience and/or references to advanced age when that would be harmful to job applications. He suggested that I remove all dates from my resume, and only claim those dates of work that are required by the application, for example, describe your 10 year work history. Again, I am sorry to those who found this distasteful, and will not take his advice.

Jobs and education needs starting and ending dates. Include the month and year.
Some require only the last ten years. If the length of the years of experience is not specified add all work history after college. If you worked in college to pay for college and/or flight training include that. *That* is part of *your* story.
Pay for professional advice or get it from people that work with pilot recruiting. The advice you got doesn't seem appropriate.
