Default Radiotelephone Operators Permit for FDX/UPS

So whats the scoop? Some folks are telling me that I need to get this ROP for the airlines. I didnt see it listed in the requirements for FDX or UPS. I'm going to see if I can get one anyway but does anyone know if this is a requirement to have or not? I've been flying both domestically and internationally for several years and never had one. Do they give the military guys a pass on this or what?? Thanks for any info

I had to get one for FDX, cost me about 50$ or so. I got it on FCC.gov, I think. The way it was explained to me is that it's basically another tax from the govt and you gotta pay it. Never had to get one in the military, didn't even hear about it until I interviewed with FDX.

If you buy CB radio or any type of transmitter you also get an application for the ROP. Same deal with the any two way radio. Uncle Sam wants a cut. It was free when I got mine, not sure when they started charging.

Didn't have to have a pilot's license in the military either.

Don't need a license for a CB, that changed several (~20) years ago.

You guys that were in the military, what is your original background, academies, ROTC, OTS? To date myself, I got mine during FIP (Flight Indoctrination Program) during AFROTC. The 15 hour to solo program in a 152 during my senior year in the early 80's. Not sure if that program is even around anymore. But fortunately for some reason I kept the card. No one ever told me what is was for.

They still have a similar program now called IFT (Introductory Flying Training - or something like that). When I went through it was slightly different from what they are doing now but the goal was the same. I didnt get the ROP though. Never even heard of it until I started looking toward the airlines. I guess the FAA puts the military in a special category (as they do for a lot of other stuff) and its not required for us....

Thanks to you guys for the info...

Great step by step. Wish I had that when I got mine.

The ROP is an absolute must. Boeing & Airbus have announced they are going back to the "radio operators station" on all aircraft.
