The same would hold true for first officers that do the same, but in this case they would wear 3 stripes that would go the length of the epaulet rather than the 3 stripes that go across the epaulet, as is normal. The 3 stripes the long way could be used to identify one as a Professional First Officer. That way, when the captain met his (or her) crew at the start of a trip, he'd be more able to gauge what he had to work with. How about them apples??
And if you work for mesa you no longer get stripes.... you get a little broomstick to remind everyone else of the A$$ rape you get!

Recently in the AOC I saw former 727 Captain, now S/O, Al W. wearing black electrical tape over his fourth stripe - folks, I'm not making this up - what a goof!

The idea that "he earned his stripes" doesn't make much sense, EVERYBODY at any major has PIC time which means they were a CAPT somewhere, (even on the corp side). Of course a guy could wear his military dress blues or whites to work to show what he earned. I have a pretty cool "I love me wall" of things I've earned but thoes only make good conversation of what I DID not what I'm currently doing.

Someone had posted earlier that it takes away from the capt's authority in the plane if there are two guys wearing 4 stripes. What would get really confusing is if a capt had a line check and the LCA sat in the right seat, with an over 60 FE with 4 stripes sitting in the back.....

How about Captain qualified First officers. You know, the guys who can fly as Captain but bid an FO line until the company needs to upgrade them for the month (or a trip). I think they are called Lance Captains at SW. Alaska calls them Senior Quals. How about they wear 4 strips on their right shoulder and 3 on their left. Then it looks right in both seats.

I'm down with this! Then the captain would know in advance how little I care about most of the stuff that happens around here (like who is wearing what stripes) and would just know that all my climbs, cruises and descents will be at barber pole.

Or an even better idea. How about we just ditch the Navy wannabe costumes all together. You'll know the captain; he's sitting in the left seat.

Default stripes

Guys...

This thread reminds me of a Shakespeare play, "Much Ado about Nothing." Who really cares if a former capt (now fe) wears 4 stripes? All I care about is getting paid for it.

For all the Al W's out there,

There's a locker in Mempho with uniform supplies. Maybe you'd like to trade your 4 stripers for the appropriate 3's.

Just a thought
