Default Question for UPS folks on furloughs

A question for the people at UPS. I remember several years ago that UPS mgmt. threatened/ started to furlough 100 pilots. What did your union do to stop that? Was their an overtime ban/stop/self stop? ABX is furloughing and overtime is so rampant that we have many guys working if not every day almost every day each month and selling back their vacation. It is not right that people are making huge amounts of cash while guys are being furloughed. Thanks!

Not everything works perfectly with the IPA and we aren't always united, but you cannot compare UPS with ABX. ABX is not in the same league. Even though some of our guys break the rules by picking up open time and over time; there is a reason why the folks at ABX aren't working for UPS. I know for sure that if we ever had a furlough, guys would stop working all-together.

When they threatened the furloughs they also offered early retirements with the promise that those that took the offer would received the future retirement benefits that would be in the next contract (which they did). Several guys in their late 50's took the offer. Don't know exactly how many though.

Guys basically quit doing any extra flying and the company quickly realized that they couldn't furlough anyone. IPA may not be perfect but after having been involved in ALPA and APA I'd say it's the best of the three.

Is it concidered against the rules during non-contract negotiations like now?

What if a line holder picks up an extra trip a month? IS he/she frowned apon?

Just trying to learn the culture at UPS....I start next week and I am sure the company will not say what is right or wrong on that issue...

I don't know if it's frowned upon now...I wouldn't think so. But as a new hire, it's hardly worth the extra time away from home for $33/hr. At least if you wait for a JA call it's time and one half.

We started a Job Protection Program. No opentime p/u, no JA availability, no trip trades to increase credit. There were a few (less than 5%) that blew it off, but bye and large, we stuck together. The furlough was cancelledand of course, OOPs manglement said something about changing economic climate, blah, blah. My theory is that whole thing was a trial balloon to see what we would do. Hope that answers your question. If not, maybe someone with more inside knowledge can help.

The current contract at UPS allows for an IPA officially sponsered open time ban in case of furlough. I think VERY few would not honor an official announcement of that sort. It would almost be like being a scab not to.

As to whether open time pickup is currently looked down on. For the vast majority, I'd say no.

I know some people were definitely being frowned upon at my previous airline for picking up open time when we still had furloughed guys/gals after 9/11

...and rightfully so!

Front seat - welcome aboard – it’s so cool to see folks junior to me! lol You’ll love it here – I do…
