For now they are not going to furlough or fire the retreds. You will just see a huge amount of fe's on the 8 until the age 65 rule takes affect then they will able to bid back to the captain's seat where there are vacancies. Want to take a guess where that might be. Give you a hint, look north.

Retreads
I overheard two retreads talking about how unskilled today's captains and FO's are. They bloviated about how men were men and captains were captains back in their day. Their conversation contained a lot of "When I was a captain....." statements. What startled me was they both told stories about recent times when they observed situations from their back-seat beginning to deteriorate and they bragged to eachother how they just let the situtaion get almost out of hand until the front seat pilots corrected the situtaion.
It's dangerous guys like this generation that never gripped the concept of CRM. I cannot believe a pilot (or retread engineer) would let a situation get almost out of control, just so he can say "That wouldn't have happened to me if I were captain...." during the review hearing. Even new hire FE's have the CRM skills to respectfully say, "Captain, I am uncomfortable with our current situation. I think we should .........".
Personally, I cannot wait until every one of these guys are off the property.

At another company we had 2 seniority numbers. One pilot number and one engineer number. When you hit 60 and went to the back seat, you lost your pilot number and worked under the engineer number. This way if they ever had to furlough they were furloughing from the engineer position in senority order.
However, as you know, we do not have that system, and unlikely Miller would try to organize such a thing. So, the over 60 crowd will be wasting our Mutual Aid dollars.

I think there is a legal difference between furlough and mandatory retirement. If there is no job available, it isn't a furlough because you don't plan to ever call them back. There is language in the contract about furloughs, as well as mandatory retirement.
Just my guess, but if the company wanted to do this it would already be happening. They are carrying a lot of additional engineers. They probably want them to work as long as possible, as pilots if possible, so they can slowly correct the airline's staffing issues. Plus, if these guys work longer, the company pays much less reirement due to mortality issues.
Or maybe I'm wrong. Just an FO thinking out loud.

what makes anyone think that if the age 60 rule changes crewmembers operating as a second officer/FE that reached their 60th birthday will have a provision to occupy a PIC or SIC seat?
as Marvin Tikvah would say "Come On! really, Come on!"

If statistic shows that a guy flying up to 60 will die within 2 years of retirement...it probably mean these boys will be dropping like flies while working. that'll get the FAA to change the rules back in a heartbeat.

From the schedules they can get, odds of dying on the job probably range from slim to none ...
