The training for new members of a negotiating committee is a full time course that does last for one - two weeks and is held annually.
Traditionally it was expected that members of the negotiating committee would come on board and serve for many years, thus learning the ins and outs and the way the process works with their individual companies.
It was never intended that the negotiating committee be an ad hoc type organization, coming together for 1 contract then disbanding. The chairman was the one with experience and would be grooming his/her replacement almost from the day they took the position. People were expected to have a long term commitment to the committee. That was the old school theory any way.
This was also supposed to be the case for the grievance committee people as well.

To give the "devil his do" professional negotiatiors are not going to completely solve the problem. Far from it, but it is ridiculous that we pick a whole new bunch of "knuckle head" pilots (no offense because I love these guys) every three years to negotiate against a FedEx team of Harvard Law School Valedictorians for a contract. The other guy had a good point, would you lend any of these guys $100.00 of your own money to invest for you? Probably not, but they probably know a lot more about that than how to negotiate a contract with FedEx.

FR8Hauler, you are cute. People who graduate at the top of their law school class are not called valedictorians. They "make law review," which means they write long, boring articles about obscure pieces of jurisprudence that nobody reads or cares about. Regardless of what they are called, however, you can be sure they are sharp, unrelenting and ruthless. Fred obviously can afford the best and he's got the best. I'd rather have a root canal without anesthesia than sit across from them at the negotiation table.
And they won't be caught dead wearing a t-shirt like mine that says "Make Love, Not Law Review."

does anyone know the firm (or firms) that fdx uses for these negotiations? if so, i say we find that firm's biggest rival and hire them to negotiate for us. let those lawyers sit across the table from each other. could get bloody...and entertaining...and how bad would the world be with a few less lawyers? no offense, vagabond!
