My trip is scheduled with a two leg, front end DH that connects in my hometown.
Can I deviate only on the first leg without the second leg being canceled?
If so, is it still considered deviating if I take the scheduled second leg?
Lastly, if I'm on the scheduled second leg and it doesn't make it to destination on time, am I screwed?
Thanks.

Depends.
Is the second leg after a layover in that city or just a connection?
Just a connection: You are out of luck.
Layover : You can deviate on the first leg and keep the second leg as scheduled. However if you do this the system will cancel both of your tickets even though VIPS shows you only deviating on one leg. You need to call crew skeds to get the second leg rebooked as a scheduled ticket. Also even though VIPS shows you only deviating on the first leg, your check-in will show you deviating on both legs and make you check in at final destination. Known problems with the system, apparently not worth fixing.

Also, your ground transportation is supposed to be available at your destination, but the system will usually cancel it. Make sure you E-mail the destination ramp to let them know that you are, in fact, on the scheduled inbound D/H and ask that them to ensure the ground transportation is available.

I did a partial deviation a couple of weeks ago. My trip was revised to put a front-end DH that connected through my home city. It was inside the 60-hour window so I called CRS and requested to deviate on the first leg only but to keep the second leg intact. It worked as advertised - VIPS showed me as deviating on the first leg but second leg intact, as was GT.
You should be able to do this yourself outside the window. If you have any questions call your scheduler to make sure they know what you are trying to do.
